With the increasing demands in energy consumption and increasing environmental concerns, it is of vital significance for developing renewable and clean energy sources to substitute traditional fossil fuels. As an outstanding candidate, hydrogen is recognized as a green energy carrier due to its high gravimetric energy density, zero carbon footprints, and earth-abundance. Currently, water splitting in alkaline electrolytes represents one of the most promising methods for sustainable hydrogen production, and the key challenge lies in the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Given the rapid advances in the design and development of efficient catalysts towards the alkaline HER, especially capable transition metal (TM)-based materials, this review aims to summarise recent progress in the theoretical understanding of the alkaline HER and TM-based electrocatalysts. TM-based catalysts classified by their different anionic compositions (metals, alloys, oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, selenides, tellurides, nitrides, phosphides, carbides, and borides) are comprehensively showcased. Special attention is given to mainstream strategies that can improve the catalytic properties of each category, as well as the underlying structure–activity regimes. Additionally, the challenges for the future development of novel catalysts are also analyzed.

Recent advances in transition metal-based electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution

A climax in the development of cost-effective and high-efficiency transition metal-based electrocatalysts has been witnessed recently for sustainable energy and related conversion technologies. In this regard, structure-activity relationships based on several descriptors have already been proposed to rationally design electrocatalysts. However, the dynamic reconstruction of the surface structures and compositions of catalysts during electrocatalytic water oxidation, especially during the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), complicate the streamlined prediction of the catalytic activity. With the achievements in operando and in situ techniques, it has been found that electrocatalysts undergo surface reconstruction to form the actual active species in situ accompanied with an increase in their oxidation state during OER in alkaline solution. Accordingly, a thorough understanding of the surface reconstruction process plays a critical role in establishing unambiguous structure-composition-property relationships in pursuit of high-efficiency electrocatalysts. However, several issues still need to be explored before high electrocatalytic activities can be realized, as follows: (1) the identification of initiators and pathways for surface reconstruction, (2) establishing the relationships between structure, composition, and electrocatalytic activity, and (3) the rational manipulation of in situ catalyst surface reconstruction. In this review, the recent progress in the surface reconstruction of transition metal-based OER catalysts including oxides, non-oxides, hydroxides and alloys is summarized, emphasizing the fundamental understanding of reconstruction behavior from the original precatalysts to the actual catalysts based on operando analysis and theoretical calculations. The state-of-the-art strategies to tailor the surface reconstruction such as substituting/doping with metals, introducing anions, incorporating oxygen vacancies, tuning morphologies and exploiting plasmonic/thermal/photothermal effects are then introduced. Notably, comprehensive operando/in situ characterization together with computational calculations are responsible for unveiling the improvement mechanism for OER. By delivering the progress, strategies, insights, techniques, and perspectives, this review will provide a comprehensive understanding of the surface reconstruction in transition metal-based OER catalysts and future guidelines for their rational development.

Stability challenges of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction: From mechanistic understanding to reactor design

Copper electrocatalysts have been shown to selectively reduce carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons. Nevertheless, the absence of a systematic study based on time-resolved spectroscopy renders the functional agent-either metallic or oxidative Copper-for the selectivity still undecidable. Herein, we develop an operando seconds-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy to uncover the chemical state evolution of working catalysts. An oxide-derived Copper electrocatalyst is employed as a model catalyst to offer scientific insights into the roles metal states serve in carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). Using a potential switching approach, the model catalyst can achieve a steady chemical state of half-Cu(0)-and-half-Cu(I) and selectively produce asymmetric C2 products - C2H5OH. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis reveals that a surface composed of Cu-Cu(I) ensembles can have dual carbon monoxide molecules coupled asymmetrically, which potentially enhances the catalyst's CO2RR product selectivity toward C2 products. Our results offer understandings of the fundamental chemical states and insights to the establishment of selective CO2RR.
