The Internet has led to the creation of a digital society, where (almost) everything is connected and is accessible from anywhere. However, despite their widespread adoption, traditional IP networks are complex and very hard to manage. It is both difficult to configure the network according to predefined policies, and to reconfigure it to respond to faults, load, and changes. To make matters even more difficult, current networks are also vertically integrated: the control and data planes are bundled together. Software-defined networking (SDN) is an emerging paradigm that promises to change this state of affairs, by breaking vertical integration, separating the network's control logic from the underlying routers and switches, promoting (logical) centralization of network control, and introducing the ability to program the network. The separation of concerns, introduced between the definition of network policies, their implementation in switching hardware, and the forwarding of traffic, is key to the desired flexibility: by breaking the network control problem into tractable pieces, SDN makes it easier to create and introduce new abstractions in networking, simplifying network management and facilitating network evolution. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on SDN. We start by introducing the motivation for SDN, explain its main concepts and how it differs from traditional networking, its roots, and the standardization activities regarding this novel paradigm. Next, we present the key building blocks of an SDN infrastructure using a bottom-up, layered approach. We provide an in-depth analysis of the hardware infrastructure, southbound and northbound application programming interfaces (APIs), network virtualization layers, network operating systems (SDN controllers), network programming languages, and network applications. We also look at cross-layer problems such as debugging and troubleshooting. In an effort to anticipate the future evolution of this new paradigm, we discuss the main ongoing research efforts and challenges of SDN. In particular, we address the design of switches and control platforms—with a focus on aspects such as resiliency, scalability, performance, security, and dependability—as well as new opportunities for carrier transport networks and cloud providers. Last but not least, we analyze the position of SDN as a key enabler of a software-defined environment.

Software-Defined Networking: A Comprehensive Survey

We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of B4, a private WAN connecting Google's data centers across the planet. B4 has a number of unique characteristics: i) massive bandwidth requirements deployed to a modest number of sites, ii) elastic traffic demand that seeks to maximize average bandwidth, and iii) full control over the edge servers and network, which enables rate limiting and demand measurement at the edge.These characteristics led to a Software Defined Networking architecture using OpenFlow to control relatively simple switches built from merchant silicon. B4's centralized traffic engineering service drives links to near 100% utilization, while splitting application flows among multiple paths to balance capacity against application priority/demands. We describe experience with three years of B4 production deployment, lessons learned, and areas for future work.

A routing problem in static wireless ad hoc networks is considered as it arises in a rapidly deployed, sensor based, monitoring system known as the wireless sensor network. Information obtained by the monitoring nodes needs to be routed to a set of designated gateway nodes. In these networks, every node is capable of sensing, data processing, and communication, and operates on its limited amount of battery energy consumed mostly in transmission and reception at its radio transceiver. If we assume that the transmitter power level can be adjusted to use the minimum energy required to reach the intended next hop receiver then the energy consumption rate per unit information transmission depends on the choice of the next hop node, i.e., the routing decision. We formulate the routing problem as a linear programming problem, where the objective is to maximize the network lifetime, which is equivalent to the time until the network partition due to battery outage. Two different models are considered for the information-generation processes. One assumes constant rates and the other assumes an arbitrary process. A shortest cost path routing algorithm is proposed which uses link costs that reflect both the communication energy consumption rates and the residual energy levels at the two end nodes. The algorithm is amenable to distributed implementation. Simulation results with both information-generation process models show that the proposed algorithm can achieve network lifetime that is very close to the optimal network lifetime obtained by solving the linear programming problem.

Power Aware Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

An embodiment of the exemplary SoftRouter architecture includes two physically separate networks, a control plane network and a data plane network. The data plane network is one physical network for the data traffic, while the control plane network is another physical network for the control traffic. The topology of the data plane network is made up of interconnected forwarding elements (FEs). The topology of the control plane network is made up interconnected control elements (CEs). This physical independence of the control plane network from the data plane network provides for a secure mechanism to communicate among the CEs in the control plane network. In addition, this physical independence provides improved reliability and improved scalability, when compared to the traditional router architecture, where control plane message are in-band with the data plane.

Softrouter separate control network

A new algorithm for routing of messages in ad-hoc networks where the nodes are energy-constrained is presented. The routing objective is to maximize the total number of messages that can be successfully sent over the network without knowing any information regarding future message arrivals or message generation rates. From a theoretical perspective, we show that if admission control of messages is permitted, then the worst-case performance of our algorithm is within a factor of O(log(network size)) of the best achievable solution. In other words, our algorithm achieves a logarithmic competitive ratio. Our approach provides sound theoretical backing for several observations that have been made by previous researchers. From a practical perspective, we show by extensive simulations that the performance of the algorithm is very good even in the absence of admission control (the admission control being necessary only to prove the competitive ratio result), and that it also performs better than previously proposed algorithms for other suggested metrics such as network lifetime maximization. Our algorithm uses a single shortest path computation, and is amenable to efficient implementation. We also evaluate by simulations the performance impact of inexact knowledge of residual battery energy, and the impact of energy drain due to dissemination of residual energy information.

A capability is provided for providing transparent cloud computing with a virtualized network infrastructure. A method for enabling use of a resource of a data center as an extension of a customer network includes receiving, at a forwarding element (FE), a packet intended for a virtual machine hosted at an edge domain of the data center, determining a VLAN ID of the VLAN for the customer network in the edge domain, updating the packet to include the VLAN ID of the VLAN for the customer network in the edge domain, and propagating the updated packet from the FE toward virtual machine. The edge domain supports a plurality of VLANs for a respective plurality of customer networks. The packet includes an identifier of the customer network and a MAC address of the virtual machine. The VLAN ID of the VLAN for the customer network in the edge domain is determined using the identifier of the customer network and the MAC address of the virtual machine. The FE may be associated with the edge domain at which the virtual machine is hosted, an edge domain of the data center that is different than the edge domain at which the virtual machine is hosted, or the customer network. Depending on the location of the FE at which the packet is received, additional processing may be provided as needed.

Method and apparatus for transparent cloud computing with a virtualized network infrastructure

A packet filter for a router performs generalized packet filtering allowing range matches in two dimensions, where ranges in one dimension at least one dimension is defined as a power of two. To associate a filter rule with a received packet EP, the packet filter employs a 2-dimensional interval search and memory look-up with the filter-rule table. Values of s m of filter-rule r m =(s m ,d m ) in one dimension are desirably ranges that are a power of two, such as prefix ranges, which are represented by a binary value having a “length” defined as the number of bits to of the prefix. The d m may be single points, ranges defined as prefix ranges, and/or ranges defined as continuous ranges. The packet filter employs preprocessing of the filter-rules based on prefix length as a power of 2 in one dimension and decomposition of overlapping segments into non-overlapping intervals in the other dimension to form the filter-rule table. A preprocessing algorithm searches in one dimension through filter rules and arranges the corresponding filter-rule rectangle segments according to prefix length. Then, in the other dimension, the overlapping filter rectangle segments are decomposed into non-overlapping intervals, and the highest priority filter-rule overlapping each non-overlapping interval is associated with that interval. A filter-rule table is then constructed with entries ordered according to prefix length and non-overlapping interval, each entry associated with a particular filter-rule. A packet classification algorithm then matches the field or other parameter information in the packet to the filter-rule table entries to identify the filter-rule rectangle associated with the filter-rule to be applied to the packet.
