Burial duration, depth and air pocket explain avalanche survival patterns in Austria and Switzerland
Emily Procter,Giacomo Strapazzon,Tomas Dal Cappello,Benjamin Zweifel,Andreas Würtele,Andreas Renner,Markus Falk,Hermann Brugger +7 more
TL;DR: The survival curves resembled those previously published andsupport the idea that underlying survival patterns are reproducible and serve as a reminder that expedient companion rescue within a few minutes is critical for survival.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative stress response to acute hypobaric hypoxia and its association with indirect measurement of increased intracranial pressure: a field study.
Giacomo Strapazzon,Sandro Malacrida,Alessandra Vezzoli,Tomas Dal Cappello,Marika Falla,Piergiorgio Lochner,Sarah Moretti,Emily Procter,Hermann Brugger,Simona Mrakic-Sposta +9 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, this study investigated changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress biomarkers during exposure to hypobaric hypoxia in 16 lowlanders and looked at the potential relationship between ROS related cellular damage and optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) as an indirect measurement of intracranial pressure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physician staffed helicopter emergency medical systems can provide advanced trauma life support in mountainous and remote areas.
J. Ausserer,Elizabeth Moritz,Matthias Stroehle,Hermann Brugger,Giacomo Strapazzon,Simon Rauch,Peter Mair,Francesco Bonsante,Manfred Brandstätter,Tomas Dal Cappello,Gerold Drüge,Markus Falk,Ernst Fop,Andreas Frasnelli,Lukas Gasteiger,Elisabeth Gruber,Georg Hofer,Wolfgang Lunz,Martin Palma,Franz Ploner,Georg Rammlmair,Alberto Trincanato,Rachel Turner,Peter Zanon,Wolfgang G. Voelckel,Clemens Dengg,Margareth Kettner +26 more
TL;DR: The frequent combination of prolonged pre-hospital times, with critical impairment of vital functions, supports the need for early ATLS in HEMS mountain rescue missions and indicates the difficulties to increase blood pressure to a desired level in a mountain rescue scenario.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of low ambient temperature on epitympanic temperature measurement: a prospective randomized clinical study.
Giacomo Strapazzon,Emily Procter,Gabriel Putzer,Giovanni Avancini,Tomas Dal Cappello,Norbert Überbacher,Georg Hofer,Bernhard Rainer,Georg Rammlmair,Hermann Brugger +9 more
TL;DR: Epitympanic temperature measurements are influenced by ambient temperature and deviate from Tes at room and low ambient temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of snow properties on humans breathing into an artificial air pocket – an experimental field study
Giacomo Strapazzon,Peter Paal,Peter Paal,Jürg Schweizer,Markus Falk,Benjamin Reuter,Kai Schenk,Hannes Gatterer,Katharina Grasegger,Tomas Dal Cappello,Sandro Malacrida,Lukas Riess,Hermann Brugger +12 more
TL;DR: It is reported that in healthy subjects breathing into snow with an artificial air pocket, snow density had a direct influence on ventilation, oxygenation and exhaled CO2 andSnow properties determine the oxygen support by diffusion from the surrounding snow and the clearance of CO2 by diffusion and absorption.
