Application of supercritical CO2 in lipid extraction – A review

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is increasingly promoted as an environmentally benign alternative to conventional organic solvents. The supercritical state bridges the gap between liquid and gaseous states by offering gaslike diffusion rates and liquidlike solvent densities, thereby enabling potential opportunities as a reaction and separation medium in chemical industry. Understanding the solvent behavior of liquid and scCO2 is of critical importance to enable the design of CO2-philic molecular systems and to expand the use of these solvent systems to a wider range of chemical processes. Historically CO2 was treated as a nonpolar solvent, primarily because of its low dielectric constant and zero molecular dipole moment. Supercritical fluid extraction: metals as complexes

The solubilities of the acetylacetone chelates in supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) at 333 K and 9.8–29.4 MPa were strongly influenced by the extraction pressure, and by the nature of the metals and the number of acetylacetone ligands in the chelates. It was found that acetylacetone chelates could be extracted selectively by SC-CO2 treatment because of significant differences in their solubilities in SC-CO2.

A supercritical carbon dioxide extraction from mixtures of triglycerides and higher fatty acid methyl esters using a gas-effusion-type system

The extraction of some organic substances from freezed-dried mackerel powder was performed using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC–CO2) at 4.9–24.5 MPa and 313 K in a fixed-bed flow extractor. It was found that the rate of extraction was enhanced by raising the pressure. The overall yield of the SC–CO2 extraction was comparable to that of a hot-hexane-extraction from the same material. The SC–CO2 extraction produced glycerides of pharmacologic significance such as icosapentaenoic acid (IPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from mackerel. In addition, a kinetic model for extraction with supercritical fluids is described, and is applied to correlate our results obtained in the SC–CO2 extraction of mackerel. This model could express the transport within the solid in the supercritical fluid extraction process.
