Spatiotemporal indicators of solar energy potential in the Guiana Shield using GOES images

Faced with the growing challenges of global warming, the deployment of renewable energy appears to be a necessary condition to achieve sustainable development. Having a crucial role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, they can also contribute to ensure universal access to modern energy services. French Guiana as a French overseas territory is heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels. It is a two-tier society where there is a large gap between the coastal and the inland areas concerning energy access. Compared to the coastline, the household electrification rate in the rural areas remains lower. In addition, the expected demographic growth and the aging of production means raise profound questions about how sustainably meet projected energy demand. According to the French Energy Transition for Green Growth Act, the main objective is to develop renewable and clean energy in order to achieve energy self-sufficiency for the entire territory. Due to its favorable location offering a wide range of potential renewable sources, French Guiana is a good candidate for developing efficient and environmentally-friendly renewable generation projects. However, there are still many barriers to overcome in order to facilitate investments in this risky field. This paper aims to make an inventory of the energy situation in French Guiana, identify the challenges restricting the widespread use of renewable energy and propose some recommendations towards a sustainable development.

Renewable Energy in French Guiana: Prospects towards a Sustainable Development Scenario

Increasing the utilization of renewable energy is at the center of most sustainability policies. Solar energy is the most abundant resource of this type on Earth, and optimizing its use requires the optimal estimation of surface solar irradiation. Heliosat-2 is one of the most popular methods of global horizontal irradiation (GHI) estimation. Originally developed for the Meteosat satellite, Heliosat-2 has been modified in previous work to deal with GOES-13 data and named here GOES_H2. This model has been validated through the computation of indicators and irradiation maps for the Guiana Shield. This article proposes an improved version of GOES_H2, which has been combined with a radiative transfer parameterization (RTP) and the McClear clear-sky model (MC). This new version, hereafter designated RTP_MC_GOES_H2, was tested on eight stations from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network, located in North and South America, and covered by GOES-13. RTP_MC_GOES_H2 improves the hourly GHI estimates independently of the type of sky. This improvement is independent of the climate, no matter the station, the RTP_MC_GOES_H2 gives better results of MBE and RMSE than the original GOES_H2 method. Indeed, the MBE and RMSE values, respectively, change from −11.93% to −2.42% and 23.24% to 18.24% for North America and from −4.35% to 1.79% and 19.97% to 17.37 for South America. Moreover, the flexibility of the method may allow to improve results in the presence of snow cover and rainy/variable weather. Furthermore, RTP_MC_GOES_H2 results outperform or equalize those of other operational models.

Updated GOES-13 Heliosat-2 Method for Global Horizontal Irradiation in the Americas

French Guiana is located in South America close to the equator (between 2° and 4° N), a huge asset in the production of electrical power with the use of solar panels. The yearly average solar-radiation is 5.8 kWh/m2day .The main focus of this study is to determine the solar energy potential in French Guiana using Kernel density estimation.
The knowledge of surface solar irradiance may be obtained using physical laws such as radiative transfert functions that link satellite apparent albedo to surface irradiance. However, due to the complexity of physical processes, it is difficult to develop accurate and reliable nonlinear observation law, in particular in a tropical area (our area of study). In this work we used a two dimensional Kernel density estimation with a learning dataset of clearness index data and apparent albedo data to estimate surface solar irradiance.
A time series of images every 30 min from the visible channel of the GOES-13 meteorological geostationary satellites from the year 2010 to 2013 has been selected with a spatial resolution of 1 km x 1 km. Hourly in-situ measurement data from six ground reference stations were provided by the French national meteorological agency.
The predicted solar irradiance values from the Kernel density estimation were given in the form of hourly, monthly and annual maps. The maps obtained highlighted interesting trends: the annual average maps showed that the western side of French Guiana receives the highest irradiance values and is dependent on the position of the InterTropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
The mean bias percentage error and mean RMSE values were respectively found to be less than 5% and 10% for the testing stations on a hourly basis. The kernel density estimation show great accuracies for evaluating solar resource potential. These results give a first overview of the solar energy potential in French Guiana.
