Review of the field-data base for longshore sediment transport

Monochromatic wave overtopping over the crest of an impermeable coastal structure located on a sloping beach is predicted numerically by expanding the numerical model developed previously for predicting wave run-up on such a structure located on the horizontal seabed The expanded numerical model predicts the temporal variations of the velocity and depth of the flow over the crest of the structure from which the average overtopping rate per unit width is computed The model accounts for the effect of wave shoaling on the sloping beach in front of the structure located in relatively shallow water The computed average overtopping rates are shown to be in agreement with available small-scale test data for which smooth impermeable structures were fronted by a 1:10 slope The numerical model also predicts the decrease of wave reflection due to the increase of wave overtopping However, more detailed measurements will be required to further calibrate and evaluate the numerical model which may be extended to examine the armor stability of overtopped breakwaters

Wave overtopping on coastal structures

The longshore sediment transport along the coast is investigated by use of detailed sediment transport models in the surf zone. Combined with a detailed description of the wave height and longshore current distribution in the surf-zone, the littoral drift along the coast is calculated and presented in dimensionless diagrams for coasts with constant slope. The paper further analyzes the transverse distribution of the long-shore sediment transport on a coast with bars. The last case is compared with field measurements.

The Danish Natural Gas and Oil Transmission system included the landing of a 30' Gas pipeline and a 20' Oil pipeline in a common shore approach at the Danish North Sea Coast. The location of the site is shown in Figure 1.1.

In recent years, the concept of unconventional rubble mound breakwaters, i.e berm breakwaters, has gained much attention among researchers and engineers as an economical method to build breakwaters at certain sites. At the Danish Hydraulic Institute, the principle of berm breakwaters was first used in 1978 for the Skopun Breakwater Extension, Faroe Islands. The paper presents the results of four individual berm breakwater projects (at Skopun, Ronne, St. George, and Skalavik) and uses these practical examples for a more general discussion of the features of berm breakwaters and of appropriate parameters for the description of their behavior. It is interesting to note that although the four projects discussed are very different, the comparison of the hydraulic features show great resemblances. Berm breakwaters have attracted the attention of engineers and researchers for almost 10 years, however, the technology for the design of berm breakwaters still requires improvement, and more research is consequently encouraged.

Hydraulic Performance of Berm Breakwaters

The feasibility of a harbour project, which involves dredging of an access channel, may to a large extent depend on the future maintenance dredging in the channel. It is therefore important to be able to calculate sedimentation in dredged channels with sufficient accuracy. In 1974 and 1975 the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) carried out a study of the most feasible access channel to Warri Port situated in the Western Niger Delta, Nigeria. Two alternative entrances were studied and in conclusion it was recommended to improve the existing access channel through Escravos Entrance.
