In an Item-based system, Images (e.g., JPEG, TIFF, bitmap, and so on) are treated as core platform objects (“Image Items” or, more simply, “Images”) and exist in an “Image Schema” that provides an extensible representation of an Image in the system—that is, the characteristics of an Image and how that Image relates to other Items (including but not limited to other Images) in the system. To this end, the Image Schema defines the properties, behaviors, and relationships for Images in the system, and the Schema also enforces rules about Images, for example, what data specific Images must contain, what data specific Images may optionally contain, how specific Images can be extended, and so on and so forth.

Systems and methods for the implementation of a digital images schema for organizing units of information manageable by a hardware/software interface system

A method of and system for encrypting and decrypting data on a computer system is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises an encrypting operating system (EOS), which is a modified UNIX operating system. The EOS is configured to use a symmetric encryption algorithm and an encryption key to encrypt data transferred from physical memory to secondary devices, such as disks, swap devices, network file systems, network buffers, pseudo file systems, or any other structures external to the physical memory and on which can data can be stored. The EOS further uses the symmetric encryption algorithm and the encryption key to decrypt data transferred from the secondary devices back to physical memory. In other embodiments, the EOS adds an extra layer of security by also encrypting the directory structure used to locate the encrypted data. In a further embodiment a user or process is authenticated and its credentials checked before a file can be accessed, using a key management facility that controls access to one or more keys for encrypting and decrypting data.

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to a storage platform (figure 20) comprising: a data store in which data stored therein is defined in terms of items, elements, and relationships (figure 20, 2014), wherein an item is a unit of data storable in the data store and comprises one or more elements, an element is an instance of a type (figure 20, 2016) comprising one or more fields, and a relationship is a link between at least two items; a set of schemas (figure 20, 2014) that define different types of items, elements, and relationships (figure 20, 2016); and an application programming interface (figure 20, 350a, 350b, or 350c) comprising a class (figure 20, 2008) for each of the different items, elements, and relationships defined in the set of schemas. Data may also be stored in the data store in the form of an extension to an existing item type, and wherein the application programming interface comprises a class for each different item extension (figure 20, 2006).

Systems and methods for interfacing application programs with an item-based storage platform

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to synchronization utilizing one or more optimizations through the utilization of metadata. For several embodiments of the present invention, one method for optimizing synchronization is to reduce the overhead required for said synchronization by having each peer only tracking changes for itself and other peers within its change community (or communities) (a.k.a., “Intra-Community-Only Change Tracking Optimization”). For certain embodiments of the present invention, another method for optimizing synchronization is to not create synchronization overhead until required. For numerous embodiments of the present invention, yet another method for optimizing synchronization is to minimize redundant use of a partner's unique global ID—a large and cumbersome number—and to instead maintain a table that cross-references each partner (and its unique global ID) with a smaller and much less cumbersome partner key.

Systems and methods for the utilization of metadata for synchronization optimization

Several embodiments of the present invention employ synchronization adapters for synchronizing information between “WinFS” and non-“WinFS” data sources. Examples of adapters include an adapter that synchronizes address book information between a “WinFS” contacts folder and a non-WinFS mailbox. In these instances, adapter developers might use the “WinFS” synchronization core services API described herein for accessing services provided by the “WinFS” synchronization platform in order to develop schema transformation code between the “WinFS” schema and the non-“WinFS” data source schema. Additionally, the adapter developer provides protocol support for communicating changes with the non-“WinFS” data source. A synchronization adapter is invoked and controlled by using the synchronization controller API and reports progress and errors using this API.

Systems and methods for providing synchronization services for units of information manageable by a hardware/software interface system

An apparatus, program product and method to manage access to a shared resource by a plurality of processes in a multithreaded computer via a collection of atomic operations that track both the order in which requests that use a shared resource are received, and the order in which processing of such requests are completed after they are received. Dispatching of requests is effectively deferred until processing of all non-dispatched requests that were received earlier than a most recently completed request has been completed. In many instances, completion of processing of requests can be performed non-atomically, thus reducing contention issues with respect to the shared resource. Furthermore, dispatching of requests may be batched to reduce the overhead associated with individual dispatch operations.
