Users may define new services, including the schedule of the services and the type, such as alert services or scheduled services, and may also subscriber to the services provided by the system. Subscribers may be specified by a dynamic recipient list that is resolved each time the service is processed to determine recipients of the service output. The system and method combines personalized information broadcast technology with an active voice page. An active voice page is created by the system, stored in a call database and used to generate dynamic voice menus. A call server retrieves the AVP from the call database and delivers the content of the service by dialing a subscriber's telephone number, speaking message text to the subscriber and recording the subscriber's input in response to the call menus. The invention concerns a method of transmitting data between computer systems, a value (9) being encoded in accordance with a syntax (8) by a first computer system (2) and transmitted as a data sequence. This data sequence is received by a second computer system (4) and decoded, using the same syntax (13) to give the value (14) again. In the event that the second computer system does not know the syntax (8) of the first computer system (2), this syntax (8) is encoded by the first computer system and transmitted to the second computer system (4). The second computer system receives and decodes the transmitted data sequence and thus obtains the previously unknown syntax (13). This enables a dynamic communications system to be produced which can be adapted to a previously unknown syntax.
