Optimization Tools for Building Energy Model Calibration

Drilling of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic/Titanium alloy (CFRP/Ti) stacks represents one of the most widely used machining methods for making holes to fasten assemblies in civil aircraft. However, poor machinability of CFRP/Ti stacks in combination with the inhomogeneous behavior of CFRP and Ti alloy face manufacturing and scientific community with a problem of defining significant factors and conditions for ensuring hole quality in the CFRP/Ti alloy stacks. Herein, we investigate the effects of drilling parameters on drilling temperature and hole quality in CFRP/Ti alloy stacks by applying an artificial neuron network (ANN). We varied cutting speed, feed rate, and time delay factors according to the factorial design L9 Taguchi orthogonal array and measured the drilling temperature, hole diameter, and out of roundness by using a thermocouple and coordinate measuring machine methods for ANN analysis. The results show that the drilling temperature was sensitive to the effect of stack material layer, cutting speed, and time delay factors. The hole diameter was mainly affected by feed, stack material layer, and time delay, while out of roundness was influenced by the time delay, stack material layer, and cutting speed. Overall, ANN can be used for the identification of the drilling parameters–hole quality relationship.

Application of ANN for Analysis of Hole Accuracy and Drilling Temperature When Drilling CFRP/Ti Alloy Stacks

Based on a six-storey cross-laminated timber building equipped with a base isolation system, this article proposes predictive models for the fundamental period of vibration, a parameter that needs to be selected in early stages of a seismically isolated building's design process, in relation to economic losses, such as repair costs and repair time, and environmental losses, such as repair-related carbon footprint and embodied energy . The predictive models were calibrated using a dataset of 114 bidirectional accelerograms recorded in Chile between 1985 and 2020, with event magnitudes ranging from M w 7 to Mw 8.8. A single functional form was selected for the four resilience parameters used, having an average coefficient of determination of R2 = 0.62. Results suggest that the selection of the fundamental period of vibration of a mid-rise seismically isolated CLT building can have a significant impact on the potential economic and environmental losses likely to occur when subjected to severe seismic events, and therefore, its selection should be based not only on technical aspects but also resilience and sustainability parameters.

Resilience-based predictive models for the seismic behaviour of mid-rise, base-isolated CLT buildings for social housing applications in Chile

This paper has been focused on the properties of construction material based on cellulose. More specifically, their use as non-bearing walls, coating-panels and/or anti-humidity panels. It has been obtained from the recycling of urban waste, such as paper and paperboard. The performance of this material has been evaluated in relation to five parameters: dimensional stability against humidity, fire action, decay resistance front fungal degradation, and, their behavior as temperature and acoustics isolation. The performance of manufactured materials has been verified considering environmental factors, and simulating the condition of the material in service. This yielded satisfactory results in relation to all the agents mentioned, which allows concluding that the material fulfills the desired function. It has been concluded that the designed and manufactured panels have the necessary characteristics to replace insulating materials or Gypsum plasterboard type enclosure, extending the range of materials for this function, through the incorporation of a new option based on recycled raw material, low-cost manufacture and minimal energy resources used.
