The character of the ground state of an antiferromagnetic insulator is fundamentally altered following addition of even a small amount of charge1. The added charge is concentrated into domain walls across which a π phase shift in the spin correlations of the host material is induced. In two dimensions, these domain walls are ‘stripes’ which can be insulating2,3 or conducting4,5,6 — that is, metallic ‘rivers’ with their own low-energy degrees of freedom. However, in arrays of one-dimensional metals, which occur in materials such as organic conductors7, interactions between stripes typically drive a transition to an insulating ordered charge-density-wave (CDW) state at low temperatures. Here it is shown that such a transition is eliminated if the zero-point energy of transverse stripe fluctuations is sufficiently large compared tothe CDW coupling between stripes. As a consequence, there should exist electronic quantum liquid-crystal phases, which constitute new states of matter, and which can be either high-temperature superconductors or two-dimensional anisotropic ‘metallic’ non-Fermi liquids. Neutron scattering and other experiments in the copper oxide superconductor La1.6−xNd0.4SrxCuO4 already provide evidence for the existence of these phases in at least one class of materials.

Electronic liquid-crystal phases of a doped Mott insulator

Early quantum theories of electrical conduction were semiclassical. Electrons were accelerated according to Bloch’s theorem; this was balanced by back scattering due to phonons and lattice defects. Cross sections for scattering, and band structures, were calculated quantum-mechanically, but the balancing process allowed only for occupation probabilities, not permitting a totally coherent process. Also, in most instances, scatterers at separate locations were presumed to act incoherently. Totally quantum-mechanical theories stem from the 1950s, and have diverse sources. Particularly intense concern with the need for more quantum mechanical approaches was manifested in Japan, and Kubo’s formulation became the most widely accepted version. Quantum theory, as described by the Schrodinger equation, is a theory of conservative systems, and does not allow for dissipation. The Schrodinger equation readily allows us to calculate polarizability for atoms, molecules, or other isolated systems that do not permit electrons to enter or leave. Kubo’s linear-response theory is essentially an extended theory of polarizability. Some supplementary handwaving is needed to calculate a dissipative effect such as conductance, for a sample with boundaries where electrons enter and leave (Anderson, 1997). After all, no theory that ignores the interfaces of a sample to the rest of its circuit can possibly calculate the resistance of such a sample of limited extent. Modern microelectronics has provided the techniques for fabricating very small samples. These permit us to study conductance in cases where the carriers have a totally quantum mechanically coherent history within the sample, making it essential to take the interfaces into account. Mesoscopic physics, concerned with samples that are intermediate in size between the atomic scale and the macroscopic one, can now demonstrate in manufactured structures much of the quantum mechanics we associate with atoms and molecules.

Conductance viewed as transmission

This tutorial review gives an elementary and self-contained derivation of the standard identities OwhOxUFh eif hOxU , etc.) for abelian bosonization in 1 dimension in a system of finite size L, following and simplifying Haldane's constructive approach. As a non-trivial application, we rigorously resolve (following Furusaki) a recent controversy regarding the tunneling density of states, r dos OwU, at the site of an impurity in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid: we use finite-size refer- mionization to show exactly that for ga 1 its asymptotic low-energy behavior is r dos OwUw. This agrees with the results of Fabrizio & Gogolin and of Furusaki, but not with those of Oreg and Finkel'stein (probably because we capture effects not included in their mean-field treatment of the Coulomb gas that they obtained by an exact mapping; their treatment of anti-commutation rela- tions in this mapping is correct, however, contrary to recent suggestions in the literature). — The tutorial is addressed to readers with little or no prior knowledge of bosonization, who are inter- ested in seeing ''all the details‚ explicitly; it is written at the level of beginning graduate students, requiring only knowledge of second quantization, but not of field theory (which is not needed here). At the same time, we hope that experts too might find useful our explicit treatment of certain subtleties that can often be swept under the rug, but are crucial for some applications, such as the calculation of rdosOwU - these include the proper treatment of the so-called Klein factors that act as fermion-number ladder operators (and also ensure the anti-commutation of different species of fermion fields), the retention of terms of order 1=L, and a novel, rigorous formulation of finite-size refermionization of both F eiFOxU and the boson field FOxU itself.

Bosonization for beginners — refermionization for experts

A theoretical review is given on high temperature superconductivity in copper oxides (cuprates) by focusing on the hole doping cases based on the view that it is realized in carrier doped Mott insulators, as noted by Anderson in the initial stage. From the detailed knowledge of electronic states deduced from experiments that showed the undoped parent case is Mott insulators (charge transfer type insulators, to be precise) and that the hole doping is mainly on oxygen sites, the t?J model, as derived by Zhang and Rice, is shown to be a canonical model for hole doped cuprates and values of various parameters of the model have been assessed. Results of many different numerical methods so far obtained for this t?J model, especially the variational Monte Carlo method, have clearly indicated the stability of the -wave superconductivity at absolute zero for the parameter region of actual experimental interest and the particular doping dependences of the condensation energy of superconductivity reflecting particular features of doped Mott insulators. For finite temperatures, on the other hand, the field theoretical slave-boson approximation based on the spin (spinons) and charge (holons) separations and the gauge fields as a glue combining them predicts qualitatively particular features of the existence of characteristic crossover temperatures of the spin singlet of the resonating valence bond (RVB) state, TRVB and the onset of Bose condensation of holons, TB, triggering coherent motion of electrons as convoluted particles of spinons and holons. The considerations based on the gauge field indicate that the onset temperature of superconductivity, Tc, is the lower one of these two, i.e. either TB (overdoped cases) or TRVB (underdoped cases), respectively. These characteristic features of the 'phase diagram' at finite temperatures are in overall agreement with various experimental observations, especially with the existence of spin-gap or pseudo-gap phases. In more detailed examinations of the underdoped region, the antiferromagnetic long-range order and superconductivity show a very intricate relationship at low temperatures depending on the system; they coexist as clarified in the inner layer of Hg-1245 but spin glass states intervene between them in La2?xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). It is argued that these differences can be attributed to the different degrees of disorder. Actually, theories based on the t?J model have also predicted the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the ground state of clean systems. On the other hand, interesting experimental findings of large Nernst effect and 'Fermi arc' in LSCO and impurity effects in YBCO have prompted the necessity of theoretical investigations of electronic states of lightly doped Mott insulators in the presence of strong disorder.

The t–J model for the oxide high-Tc superconductors

The collective excitation spectrum of interacting electrons in one dimension has been measured by controlling the energy and momentum of electrons tunneling between two closely spaced, parallel quantum wires in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure while measuring the resulting conductance. The excitation spectrum deviates from the noninteracting spectrum, attesting to the importance of Coulomb interactions. An observed 30% enhancement of the excitation velocity relative to noninteracting electrons with the same density, a parameter determined experimentally, is consistent with theories on interacting electrons in one dimension. In short wires, 6 and 2 micrometers long, finite size effects, resulting from the breaking of translational invariance, are observed.
