Glass transition and molecular dynamics in poly(dimethylsiloxane)/silica nanocomposites

The amount of immobilized polymer in PMMA SiO2 nanocomposites determined from calorimetric data

For semicrystalline polymers there is an ongoing debate at what temperature the immobilized or rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) devitrifies (relaxes). The question if the polymer crystals aremelting first and simultaneously theRAFdevitrifies or the RAF devitrifies first and later on the crystals melt cannot be answered easily on the example of semicrystalline polymers. This is because the crystals, which are the reason for the immobilization of the polymer, often disappear (melt) in the same temperature range as theRAF. For polymer nanocomposites the situation is simpler. Silica nanoparticles do notmelt or undergo other phase transitions altering the polymer–nanoparticle interaction in the temperature range where the polymer is thermally stable (does not degrade). The existence of an immobilized fraction in PMMA SiO2 nanocomposites was shown on the basis of heat capacitymeasurements at the glass transition of the polymer. The results were verified by enthalpy relaxation experiments below the glass transition. The immobilized layer is about 2 nm thick at low filler content if agglomeration is not dominant. The thickness of the layer is similar to that found in semicrystalline polymers and independent from the shape of the nanoparticles. Nanocomposites therefore offer a unique opportunity to study the devitrification of the immobilized fraction (RAF) without interference of melting of crystals as in semicrystalline polymers. It was found that the interaction between the SiO2 nanoparticles and the PMMA is so strong that no devitrification occurs before degradation of the polymer. No gradual increase of heat capacity or a broadening of the glass transitionwas found. The cooperatively rearranging regions (CRR) are either immobilized or mobile. No intermediate states are found. The results obtained for the polymer nanocomposites support the view that the reason for the restricted mobility must disappear before the RAF can devitrify. For semicrystalline polymers this means that rigid crystals must melt before the RAF can relax. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The amount of immobilized polymer in PMMA SiO$_{2}$ nanocomposites determined from calorimetric data

A review of the current state of understanding of dielectric mixture properties, and approaches to use numerical calculations for their modeling are presented. It is shown that interfacial polarization can yield different non-Debye dielectric responses depending on the properties of the constituents, their concentrations and geometrical arrangements. Future challenges on the subject are also discussed.

Dielectric mixtures: electrical properties and modeling

We report new results on segmental dynamics and glass transition in a series of poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks filled with silica nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel techniques, obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC), broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The nanocomposites are characterized by a fine dispersion of 10 nm silica particles and hydrogen bonding polymer/filler interactions. The first three techniques indicate, in agreement with each other, that a fraction of polymer in an interfacial layer around the silica particles with a thickness of 2–3 nm shows modified dynamics. The DSC data, in particular measurements of heat capacity jump at Tg, are analyzed in terms of immobilized polymer in the interfacial layer. The dielectric TSDC and DRS data are analyzed in terms of slower dynamics in the interfacial layer as compared to bulk dynamics. We employ a special version of TSDC, the so-called thermal sampling (TS) technique, and provide experimental evidence for a continuous distribution of glass transition temperatures (Tg) and molecular mobility of the polymer in the interfacial layer, which is consistent with the DRS data. Finally, DMA results show a moderate slowing down of segmental dynamics of the whole polymer matrix (increase of glass transition temperature by about 10 K as compared to the pure matrix).

Glass transition and segmental dynamics in poly(dimethylsiloxane)/silica nanocomposites studied by various techniques

The molecular dynamics of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and its mixtures with hydrophilic and hydrophobic Aerosil (fumed silica) was investigated. After quenching from ambient temperature and subsequent reheating to about 150 K, pure PDMS exhibits the α-relaxation in the amorphous state. At higher temperatures the α c -relaxation process, which is assigned to the relaxation of the amorphous fraction in the semicrystalline polymer, is observed. Filled PDMS shows in contrast three distinct relaxation processes which originate from the varying degree of interaction with the filler surface
