The effect of various substances on the polycondensation of the ethyl ester of D,L-alanine was investigated.

Acids including carbonic acid in the form of carbon dioxide were found to sharply accelerate the polycondensation of esters ofα-amino acids, whereas bases and amino acids are inactive.

The kinetics of polycondensation of the ethyl ester of D,L-alanine in presence of CO2 and acetic acid and in the absence of catalysts was investigated.

It was established that with falling, temperature the amount of cyclic dimer decreases and that of linear polymer increases in the polycondensation of the ethyl ester of D,L-alanine.




5.

Co-polycondensation of ethyl esters of D,L-phenylalanine and glycine is shown to lead to formation of water-soluble products.

High molecular compounds

The reactions of model molecules were considered to study the kinetics and the mechanism of the esterification and the alcoholysis reactions catalyzed by various metal compounds (Li, Na, K, Zn, Co, Mn, Ti). Ti was found to be the most active catalyst for both reactions and to be acting via a different mechanism (concerted). The possible structure of the active titanium intermediate was investigated by means of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, FT–IR spectroscopy, and electroconductivity.
