TL;DR: In this paper , the authors evaluate the psychometric properties of the referred model in the Portuguese context and find that empowerment will be a basic strategy to improve the organizational transformations that companies constantly face.
Abstract: In the competitive global marketplace, it is becoming important for organizations to empower employees for productivity reasons. One of the organizational empowerment models with greater support and consistency in the various studies in which it has been used is Spreitzer's Model of Psychological Empowerment in the Workplace, published in 1995. The model is composed of four dimensions that allow the measurement of the components of meaning, competence, self-determination and the impact of work on individual empowerment. The present study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties, in the Portuguese context, of the referred model. After the translation and adaptation of the psychological empowerment scale, the questionnaire was applied to a sample of 545 workers from Portuguese industrial organizations. The results of the application of structural equation modeling allow identifying the same components defined by the Spreitzer model, so it can be considered a reliable and valid instrument to measure organizational empowerment in the Portuguese context. However, we consider that complementary studies are necessary to analyze the psychometric properties of the scale and to further advance the research. The results obtained allow us to affirm that empowerment will be a basic strategy to improve the organizational transformations that companies constantly face. It is therefore important for Portuguese organizations to analyze the level of psychological empowerment of their employees, in order to find solutions to problems such as turnover, talent attraction, performance, work demotivation and improve human resource management practices. This is particularly important following the COVID-19 pandemic in which the psychology of employees was tested due to working from home and social distancing requirements. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors explore how to define entrepreneurship by focusing on different areas of entrepreneurship in terms of definitions and research opportunities in order to challenge conventional practices, with the goal of exploring new research questions and methodological approaches that are currently lacking in the entrepreneurship discourse and can be refined through future research activity.
Abstract: Entrepreneurship as a field of study has many sub-dimensions due to its usefulness in society, which makes it difficult to gain a holistic understanding of its key elements. The aim of this article is to explore how to define entrepreneurship by focusing on different areas of entrepreneurship in terms of definitions and research opportunities in order to challenge conventional practices. Each area of entrepreneurship is discussed with the goal of exploring new research questions and methodological approaches that are currently lacking in the entrepreneurship discourse and can be refined through future research activity. This enables future research directions to be identified regarding entrepreneurship in general and specific types of entrepreneurship thereby contributing to research and practice about the importance of entrepreneurship in society.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated the effect of entrepreneurial thinking mediated by social media on the sustainability of SMEs in Iran from January to February 2022, using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire with 25 questions.
Abstract: This study lends new insights into the hitherto-unexplored relationship between entrepreneurial thinking and the sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Iran, mediated by social media. The goal was to investigate the effect of entrepreneurial thinking, mediated by social media, on the sustainability of SMEs in Iran from January to February 2022. The statistical population comprised 407 SME managers based in the Pardis Technology Park and the Science and Technology Town (Iran). Using Cochran’s formula, a sample of 197 SME managers was selected via the simple random method. The data were collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire with 25 questions, the reliability and validity of which had been examined and confirmed. The data were analyzed in SmartPLS 3. The results revealed that entrepreneurial thinking plays a pivotal role in managerial decisions and is a crucial factor in the sustainability of SMEs in Iran. Managers, as creators and reformers of the internal business environment, can establish and enhance a strong link between business sustainability and employees’ ability to acquire entrepreneurial thinking.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors examined whether female tourism entrepreneurs are more interested in climate change than male entrepreneurs as part of their focus on sustainable entrepreneurial endeavors, and found that female tourists are more influenced by their social circle and general interest in environmental issues that lead them to focus on climate change actions.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to examine whether female tourism entrepreneurs are more interested in climate change than male entrepreneurs are as part of their focus on sustainable entrepreneurial endeavors. A qualitative study of female tourism entrepreneurs is examined that focuses on three main climate change strategies: conservative, compliant, and proactive. The findings suggest that female tourism entrepreneurs are more influenced by their social circle and general interest in environmental issues that lead them to focus on climate change actions. The results of this study will help tourism providers, businesses, government, and the community better understand the role of gender in sustainable tourism entrepreneurship. Climate change is a topic of immense interest in society particularly for those in the tourism industry. Sustainable tourism entrepreneurs often focus on climate change action as a way to compete in the global marketplace and to derive a competitive advantage. Less well understood is the role of gender in sustainable tourism entrepreneurship particularly in terms of perceptions around climate change action.

TL;DR: A systematic literature review on fertility tourism to identify cognate research themes that relate to social policies such as assisted reproduction facilities, medical tourism and changing societal attitudes is presented in this paper .
Abstract: PurposeThe aim of this article is to review the literature on fertility tourism in terms of social policy implications. There has been a global growth in interest in fertility tourism, especially amongst these in developed countries travelling to developing countries for fertility needs. Due to women's increased involvement in the workforce and changing societal norms, the age at which females start having children has risen resulting in a need for many to seek fertility help. These developments have led to a growth in fertility tourism and related services.Design/methodology/approachThe authors undertake a systematic literature review on fertility tourism to identify cognate research themes that relate to social policies such as assisted reproduction facilities, medical tourism and changing societal attitudes.FindingsThe findings of the study have important implications for social policy particularly regarding the tourism and health industry, practitioners and policymakers. This involves focussing on new geographic regions that are underrepresented in current research but have a high interest in fertility tourism. Currently much of the research is centred around western contexts but as evident in our review newly emerging markets in countries that have high infertility rates requires further attention. In addition, the authors provide directions for future research avenues that focus on how to evaluate changing social policies with regards to reproductive choices.Originality/valueWhilst there has been much discussion in the media about fertility tourism there is limited knowledge about social policies related to human reproductive systems, so this article is amongst the first to discuss societal implications.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors present a special issue on the digital transformation in the Balkan countries, which aims to extend and consolidate this emerging research area by mainly exploring how developing countries are dealing with digital transformation and how it impacts innovation and competitiveness.
Abstract: The current economic scenario is being characterized by the dawn of advanced digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, Business Analytics, Advanced Manufacturing, Industry 4.0/5.0, Cloud and Cyber-solutions and Artificial Intelligence, all of which represent a disruptive innovation that paves the way for radical changes in all activities by offering new innovative opportunities and solutions for thriving in a new competitive scenario. Consequently, a new paradigm has emerged, named “Digital Transformation” (DT), which highlights the sweeping changes that firms, organizations and society in general are undertaking to respond to digitization (Mariani & Wamba, 2020; Nambisan, 2017; Sjödin et al., 2020). Digital technologies are disruptive within organizations (both public and private) by way of enabling automation of data processing and timely and effective decision-making processes, as well as innovative ways to create value. Academics and practitioners alike have indicated a steadily growing interest toward analyzing and understanding the different and multifaceted dimensions, perspectives, sectors and dynamics that are intrinsic to DT (Nambisan et al., 2017; Ndou et al., 2021). It's worth noting that DT is a subject of considerable relevance for many different sectors, such as the tourism and health sector (Annosi et al., 2020; Ndou et al., 2022; Sikandar et al., 2022), as well as being pivotal in addressing social problems and in the improvement of the environmental sustainability; DTs impact the ways and mechanisms by which waste, pollution, production, and urbanism are managed and controlled (Feroz et al., 2021). Extensive studies report the unsettled impacts that DT has on business models and value creation (Ratten, 2014; Urbinati et al., 2018), for business practices and processes (Centobelli & Ndou, 2019; Guenzi & Habel, 2020; Hysa et al., 2020; Klein et al., 2020), product and service innovation, new customers and/or markets (Ferreira et al., 2017), capabilities and competencies to improve customer experience involvement in the innovation process (Nambisan et al., 2017) and business performance outcomes (Millán et al., 2021). DT is triggering a new competitive scenario and is part of a global race for innovation, skills, competencies, investment, and knowledge and research (OECD, 2020). However, leading successful DT is not an easy task because in some ways it challenges traditional linear approaches by which companies are faced with the new and iterative advances that are needed for the volatile digital economy (Li, 2020). The Covid-19 pandemic has caused an acceleration of digital technology adoption on a wider scale, forcing companies, customers, and society to make massive use of the technology. As a result, digital transformation is no longer simply an option but it is a competitive and innovative factor that is critical for public and private organizations, as well as for countries and regions. Also, the new post-pandemic recovery strategies consider digital transition as an essential component for hastening the transformation of economies (e.g. Next Generation EU, Recovery plan for Europe, EU, 2021). The purpose of this editorial paper is to provide an overview of the contributions that have been presented in the special issue titled “Industry 4.0 and digital transformation in the Balkan countries.” The special issue aims to extend and consolidate this emerging research area by mainly exploring how developing countries are dealing with digital transformation and how it impacts innovation and competitiveness. We have invited scholars to present their research that deals with the main emerging impacts and issues and impacts of new digital technologies within both the private sector (tourism, agri-food, health, to give examples etc) and the public sector; the role of digital technologies for research and education; the understanding of how DT can contribute to environmental and sustainable objectives as well as a general comprehension of the emerging issues around DT. Within this editorial we will present 4 papers that span from contributions related to the set of skills and capabilities that are necessary within for firms in order for them to be able to manage DTs up to Fintech approaches and experiences, digital transformation readiness of firms and eLearning experiences.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors discuss the reason and rationale for using a social entrepreneurship theoretical and managerial framework in event management studies, and discuss the need for a better understanding of the relevance of social entrepreneurship for event management research and practice.
Abstract: In recent years the concepts of event management and social entrepreneurship have been increasingly mentioned together due to the COVID-19 pandemic altering the global economy. As a result, there is a growing body of practical evidence related to events using a social entrepreneurship goal in their management approach. Despite the connection and fast growth of research, there is a need for a better understanding of the relevance of social entrepreneurship for event management research and practice that emphasises new practical and theoretical contributions. This article seeks to address the connection by discussing the reason and rationale for using a social entrepreneurship theoretical and managerial framework in event management studies.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors explore the role of ambidexterity and network clustering on innovation and find that a combination of exploitation and exploration leads to better innovation in agglomeration contexts.
Abstract: Abstract The extant literature shows that innovation emerges from an interorganizational process, where a division of labor (both exploitation and exploration related) occurs among the actors within the cluster. Clustered firms are ambidextrous when they balance innovative activities that exploit existing competencies and are open to new technological approaches through exploration. In this context, we are interested in the role of clusters as supportive structures creating an atmosphere that encourages the development of interorganizational relationships, which assume a key relevance in explaining the ambidexterity and innovation of firms within the cluster. The question is whether there is an ideal combination to compete today (exploitation) while preparing to compete tomorrow (exploration), and if the networks developed in an industrial cluster play a role on determining innovative performance. Therefore, this study contributes to deepen the knowledge about the role of ambidexterity and network clustering on innovation. Specifically, by presenting a framework that explores the influence of external stakeholders and other clustered agents in the response of ambidextrous organizations to the challenges raised by environmental changes, we extend our discussion to a higher level of abstraction showing how ambidexterity can be the “black box” that connects the entrepreneurship, management, and innovation fields. The analysis of 1467 Portuguese firms suggests that network clustering has a direct positive impact on innovative performance, but also an indirect, mediated effect through exploration. Additionally, we found that a combination of exploitation and exploration (i.e., combined ambidexterity), and the trade-off between the two dimensions (i.e., imbalanced ambidexterity), leads to better innovation in agglomeration contexts. Our results, therefore, provide evidence that ambidexterity is the key to manage innovation strategic entrepreneurship’s tensions but, the way in which they are managed, is contingent on the clustered firms’ ability or inability to simultaneously pursue both exploitation and exploration.
