The role of the North Aegean in triggering the recent Eastern Mediterranean climatic changes
TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest that reduced Black Sea outflow into the North Aegean through the Dardanelles could act as an insulator of the deeper layer from the atmosphere, thus absorbing a large part of the heat and salt exchange.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carbon flow in the planktonic food web along a gradient of oligotrophy in the Aegean Sea (Mediterranean Sea)
Ioanna Siokou-Frangou,M. Bianchi,Urania Christaki,Epaminondas Christou,Antonia Giannakourou,O Gotsis,Lydia Ignatiades,Kalliopi Pagou,Paraskevi Pitta,Stella Psarra,Ekaterini Souvermezoglou,F. Van Wambeke,Vassilis Zervakis +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, a study of plankton food web structure and carbon flow in March and September 1997 in the Aegean Sea, area of outflow of Black Sea waters in the Mediterranean Sea.

Phytoplankton size-based dynamics in the Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean)
Lydia Ignatiades,Stella Psarra,Vassilis Zervakis,Kalliopi Pagou,Ekaterini Souvermezoglou,Georgia Assimakopoulou,Olympia Gotsis-Skretas +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the spatial, vertical and temporal variations of size fractionated chlorophyll a, primary production, photosynthetic parameters, and the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton were assessed during three cruises performed in Spring and Autumn 1997 and Spring 1998.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydrology and circulation in the North Aegean (eastern Mediterranean) throughout 1997 and 1998
TL;DR: This combination of two research projects offered the opportunity to perform a comprehensive study of the seasonal evolution of the hydrological structure and the circulation of the North Aegean Sea, at the northern extremes of the eastern Mediterranean.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comments on “Cascades of dense water around the world ocean”
