Abstract: The vocalizations of the Wilson's storm petrel (Class Aves) are described briefly. The functions of these calls was determined by experimental playback. The grating call was highly stereotyped individually, and was used in sexual contexts (short version) or agonistic situations (long version). In contrast, the chattering call, displayed only by males, was used for self-advertisement and species recognition. The geographic variation of calls exhibited between two different populations is discussed.
