The Delphi method as a research tool: an example, design considerations and applications

This paper studies the differences in user acceptance models for productivity-oriented (or utilitarian) and pleasure-oriented (or hedonic) information systems. Hedonic information systems aim to provide self-fulfilling rather than instrumental value to the user, are strongly connected to home and leisure activities, focus on the fun-aspect of using information systems, and encourage prolonged rather than productive use. The paper reports a cross-sectional survey on the usage intentions for one hedonic information system. Analysis of this sample supports the hypotheses that perceived enjoyment and perceived ease of use are stronger determinants of intentions to use than perceived usefulness. The paper concludes that the hedonic nature of an information system is an important boundary condition to the validity of the technology acceptance model. Specifically, perceived usefulness loses its dominant predictive value in favor of ease of use and enjoyment.

User acceptance of hedonic information systems

The biggest challenge in fostering a virtual community is the supply of knowledge, namely the willingness to snare Knowledge with other members. This paper integrates the Social Cognitive Theory and the Social Capital Theory to construct a model for investigating the motivations behind people's knowledge sharing in virtual communities. The study holds that the facets of social capital -- social interaction ties, trust, norm of reciprocity, identification, shared vision and shared language -- will influence individuals' knowledge sharing in virtual communities. We also argue that outcome expectations -- community-related outcome expectations and personal outcome expectations -- can engender knowledge sharing in virtual communities. Data collected from 310 members of one professional virtual community provide support for the proposed model. The results help in identifying the motivation underlying individuals' knowledge sharing behavior in professional virtual communities. The implications for theory and practice and future research directions are discussed.

The Internet/World Wide Web (WWW) has significantly impacted every facet of operations in organizations. As information systems, including Decision Support Systems, are rapidly moving to the Internet platform to facilitate remote access and group cooperation, it is crucial to understand the adoption process of the Internet. This paper studies various factors affecting Internet/WWW usage in working environments. Previous studies on Internet or WWW usage have adopted the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as their research framework. As such, important factors, such as facilitating conditions and social factors, which we consider important in explaining the use of the Internet/WWW, were left out. Therefore, a more comprehensive theoretical model is constructed for this study by modifying the Triandis social psychological model based on the results of previous studies. Factor analysis and multiple regression were used to analyze data collected from 241 questionnaires. The results support our modified model. Facilitating conditions and social factors are confirmed as the two most important factors affecting Internet/WWW usage. Other significant factors include perceived near-term consequences and perceived complexity. All new paths that we have added to the original Triandis model are found to be significant. The proposed model should provide a valuable alternative theoretical basis for technology adoption studies in the future.
