The same neural structures involved in the unconscious modeling of our acting body in space also contribute to our awareness of the lived body and of the objects that the world contains. Neuroscientific research also shows that there are neural mechanisms mediating between the multi-level personal experience we entertain of our lived body, and the implicit certainties we simultaneously hold about others. Such personal and body-related experiential knowledge enables us to understand the actions performed by others, and to directly decode the emotions and sensations they experience. A common functional mechanism is at the basis of both body awareness and basic forms of social understanding: embodied simulation. It will be shown that the present proposal is consistent with some of the perspectives offered by phenomenology.

Embodied Simulation:From Neurons to Phenomenal Experience

The Neotropics harbor the most species-rich freshwater fish fauna on the planet, but the timing of that exceptional diversification remains unclear. Did the Neotropics accumulate species steadily throughout their long history, or attain their remarkable diversity recently? Biologists have long debated the relative support for these museum and cradle hypotheses, but few phylogenies of megadiverse tropical clades have included sufficient taxa to distinguish between them. We used 1,288 ultraconserved element loci (UCE) spanning 293 species, 211 genera and 21 families of characoid fishes to reconstruct a new, fossil-calibrated phylogeny and infer the most likely diversification scenario for a clade that includes a third of Neotropical fish diversity. This phylogeny implies paraphyly of the traditional delimitation of Characiformes because it resolves the largely Neotropical Characoidei as the sister lineage of Siluriformes (catfishes), rather than the African Citharinodei. Time-calibrated phylogenies indicate an ancient origin of major characoid lineages and reveal a much more recent emergence of most characoid species. Diversification rate analyses infer increased speciation and decreased extinction rates during the Oligocene at around 30 million years ago (Ma) during a period of mega-wetland formation in the proto-Orinoco-Amazonas. Three species-rich and ecomorphologically diverse lineages (Anostomidae, Serrasalmidae, and Characidae) that originated more than 60 Ma in the Paleocene experienced particularly notable bursts of Oligocene diversification and now account collectively for 68% of the approximately 2,150 species of Characoidei. In addition to paleogeographic changes, we discuss potential accelerants of diversification in these three lineages. While the Neotropics accumulated a museum of ecomorphologically diverse characoid lineages long ago, this geologically dynamic region also cradled a much more recent birth of remarkable species-level diversity.

Many flowers exhibit phenotypic plasticity. By inducing the production of several phenotypes, plasticity may favour the rapid exploration of different regions of the floral morphospace. We investigated how plasticity drives Moricandia arvensis, a species displaying within-individual floral polyphenism, across the floral morphospace of the entire Brassicaceae family. We compiled the multidimensional floral phenotype, the phylogenetic relationships, and the pollination niche of over 3000 species to construct a family-wide floral morphospace. We assessed the disparity between the two M. arvensis floral morphs (as the distance between the phenotypic spaces occupied by each morph) and compared it with the family-wide disparity. We measured floral divergence by comparing disparity with the most common ancestor, and estimated the convergence of each floral morph with other species belonging to the same pollination niches. Moricandia arvensis exhibits a plasticity-mediated floral disparity greater than that found between species, genera and tribes. Moricandia arvensis novel phenotype moves outside the region occupied by its ancestors and relatives, crosses into a new region where it encounters a different pollination niche, and converges with distant Brassicaceae lineages. Our study suggests that phenotypic plasticity favours floral divergence and rapid appearance of convergent flowers, a process facilitating the evolution of generalist pollination systems.

Hypomasticus copelandii is a Neotropical freshwater fish widely distributed across coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil, a highly impacted region of South America. The interspecific phylogenetic relationships within the genus and the taxonomic status of the species remain uncertain. Using two mitochondrial and one nuclear locus, we performed a phylogenetic, species delimitation, and time-calibrated analyses to test the hypothesis that H. copelandii is a species complex currently delimited by different Atlantic coastal systems. Results indicate that H. copelandii presents two well-delimited genetic lineages: one in the northern drainages of the Jucuruçu, Mucuri and Doce rivers, and the other in the southern region represented by the Paraíba do Sul River Basin. The time-calibrated phylogeny indicated a split between the two genetic lineages at around 2.8 million years ago (Ma), which might be related to headwater capture events during the Plio-Pleistocene. The discovery of a distinct genetic lineage for H. copelandii suggests distinct management plans for the northern and southern drainages. Such hidden diversity within the H. copelandii provides useful information for taxonomy and conservation across a severely impacted region of Brazil.

Phylogeography of Hypomasticus copelandii (Teleostei, Anostomidae) Reveals Distinct Genetic Lineages along Atlantic Coastal Drainages of Eastern Brazil

The establishment of a given phenotype is only one expression from a range of hidden developmental possibilities. Developmental plasticity at hidden reaction norms might elicit phenotypic diversification under new developmental environments. Current discussion benefits from empirical analyses that integrate multiple environmental stimuli to evaluate how plastic responses may shape phenotypic variation. We raised Megaleporinus macrocephalus fish in different environmental settings to address contributions of developmental plasticity for emergence of new phenotypes and subsequent morphospace diversification. Plastic morphotypes were evaluated at two complementary scales, the M. macrocephalus morphospace and the higher taxonomic level of Anostomidae family. Morphospace analyses demonstrated that developmental plasticity quickly releases distinct head morphotypes that were hidden in the parental monomorphic population. Plastic morphotypes occupied discrete and previously unfilled morphospace regions, a result obtained from comparisons with a control population and in analyses including several Anostomidae species. Plastic responses involved adjustments in shape and relative position of head bonesets, and fish raised under specific environmental combinations rescued phenotypic patterns described for different genera. Therefore, developmental plasticity possibly contributes to adaptive radiation in Anostomidae. Results illustrate how plastic responses enable morphospace diversification and contribute to evolution.

Visual perception is adapted toward a better understanding of our own movements than those of non-conspecifics. The present study determined whether time perception is affected by pictures of different species by considering the evolutionary scale. Static (“S”) and implied movement (“M”) images of a dog, cheetah, chimpanzee, and man were presented to undergraduate students. S and M images of the same species were presented in random order or one after the other (S-M or M-S) for two groups of participants. Movement, Velocity, and Arousal semantic scales were used to characterize some properties of the images. Implied movement affected time perception, in which M images were overestimated. The results are discussed in terms of visual motion perception related to biological timing processing that could be established early in terms of the adaptation of humankind to the environment.
