Design of sliding mode controller for magnetic levitation system

This paper aims at the development of a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller with a derivative filter coefficient for a magnetic levitation system (MLS), which is a highly nonlinear open loop system. The mathematical modeling of MLS is done using MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed controller simulation results are evaluated with sine wave and step response. The results obtained are also compared with PID controller. The response of the proposed PID controller with derivative filter show better response in comparison to that of conventional PID controller.

En el ambito de la investigacion existen gran variedad de trabajos relacionados con el
control de levitadores magneticos, algunos de estos trabajos comprueban sus resultados
unicamente mediante simulacion y otros utilizan resultados experimentales o ambos. Se
aplican en ellos diferentes tecnicas de control, desde control clasico [4, 8], hasta control
lineal robusto [14], pasando por control adaptativo [11], control por ganancia programada,
control difuso [8], control mediante linealizacion por realimentacion [6, 7], control por
redes neuronales [18] o control en modo deslizante [1, 4, 9, 16 ]. La mayor parte de estos
trabajos explican las propiedades y ventajas del controlador bajo estudio realizando una
comparacion exclusivamente con un unico controlador, habitualmente un PID, pero no existe una comparativa entre un abanico mayor de controladores. Este es el principal
objetivo de este proyecto, la realizacion de un estudio comparativo con un numero mayor
de controladores mediante comprobacion experimental en la misma planta.
En el ambito docente en ingenieria de control, los sistemas de levitacion magnetica tienen
un especial interes para la realizacion de laboratorios y demostraciones en clase. En
primer lugar, porque permite profundizar en las bases teoricas de una forma mas
motivante para los alumnos. Y en segundo lugar, porque permite a los estudiantes
enfrentarse a problemas reales de control, acortando de esta manera la distancia entre los
conocimientos teoricos y las aplicaciones reales. La propuesta de diferentes experimentos
aplicables tanto en estudios de grado como de postgrado en ingenieria de control es el
segundo objetivo de este proyecto.
El levitador magnetico utilizado en este proyecto es el modelo 33-210 del fabricante
Feedback Instruments Ltd., y a partir de ahora y durante toda la memoria utilizaremos el
termino Maglev para referirnos a el. En el momento de comenzar este proyecto el Maglev
acababa de llegar al laboratorio de SEC, por este motivo aun estaba pendiente de ser
instalado y no existia ningun trabajo previo dentro del grupo relacionado con levitacion
magnetica. Esto motivo que hubiesen dos objetivos previos a la realizacion de los
experimentos, el primero fue la puesta en marcha del equipo y el segundo la busqueda
bibliografica del estado del arte en control de levitadores magneticos.
La eleccion de los controladores bajo estudio se realizo teniendo en cuenta que la
levitacion magnetica es un proceso no lineal. Esto implica que para utilizar metodos de
control lineal sea necesario linealizar el sistema en torno a un punto de trabajo, mientras
que los metodos de control no lineal pueden trabajar directamente con sistemas no
lineales. La teoria indica que para desviaciones grandes respecto al punto de trabajo el
controlador lineal debe perder su efectividad, mientras que el controlador no lineal debe
trabajar con la misma efectividad independientemente del punto de trabajo. Otro aspecto
que se tuvo en cuenta a la hora de escoger los controladores bajo estudio fue la robustez
ante incertidumbres en el modelo de la planta, esto fue motivado porque unicamente se
disponia del modelo facilitado por el fabricante. Pero no existia la posibilidad de realizar
mediciones sobre el equipo para certificar la exactitud de los parametros, ni del modelo.

Control Lineal y No Lineal de un Levitador Magnético. Estudio Comparativo

In this paper the variable structure control theory is utilized to derive a discontinuous controller to the magnetic levitation system. The magnetic levitation system model is considered uncertain, which subjected to the uncertainty in system parameters, also it is open-loop unstable and strongly nonlinear. The proposed variable structure control to magnetic levitation system is proved, and the area of attraction is determined. Additionally, the chattering, which induced due to the discontinuity in control law, is attenuated by using a non-smooth approximate. With this approximation the resulted controller is a continuous variable structure controller with a determined steady state error according to the selected control parameters. Finally the ability and the effectiveness of the proposed continuous variable structure controller to the magnetic levitation system are verified via numerical simulations. When state initiated inside the area of attraction, the results show that the ball position can be directed to follow various desired positions, with steady state error not exceeding .

Variable Structure Control Design for a Magnetic Levitation System

In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is proposed to design an optimal robust fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The objective of this paper is to design a nonlinear optimal robust controller for the single axis magnetic levitation system with high accuracy. PSO algorithm is applied to search globally optimal parameters of FLCs. Three different FLCs are designed. First, proportional derivative (PD)-like FLC. Second, the FLC is based on the PSO algorithm to find the optimal range of the eight linguistic membership functions (FLC1 with PSO algorithm). Finally, the FLC is based on the PSO algorithm to find the optimal range and shape of the four linguistic membership functions (FLC2 with PSO algorithm). The performances of three different FLCs are compared. Simulation results show that PSO-based optimal FLCs find the optimal range and shape of the four linguistic membership functions and achieved better performance than the other proposed controllers, minimizing 48 fuzzy rules. © 2011 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Design of PSO‐based fuzzy logic controller for single axis magnetic levitation system

The problem of precisely controlling the position of a ferromagnetic ball above the ground by levitating it against the force of gravity using an electromagnet is of interest because the magnetic levitation system is open loop unstable and highly nonlinear. We have designed a sliding mode controller based on the concept of a proportional integral switching surface for this application. Furthermore, we have compared the proportional integral sliding mode controller and a feedback linearization controller for their performance in controlling the ball position in the presence of parametric and matched uncertainties. Simulation results show that the proportional integral sliding mode controller is more effective than a feedback linearization controller.
