Porphyrins in analytical chemistry. A review.

This review focuses on the more significant contributions to the understanding and use of ion-selective electrodes (ISE's). There is a strong interest in this field as over 1400 articles and abstracts were found during the writing of this review which covers the period from January 1986 through December 1987. The major analytical and electrochemical journals were read and a hand search of Chemical Abstracts uncovered the remaining articles. Unlike previous fundamental reviews, this paper will not attempt to list all the pertinent papers on ISE's. Rather, the more interesting works and applications are covered to illustrate examples of the general trends and directions of ISE interests.

Ion-Selective Electrodes.

Delayed gate fluorescence detection of dipicolinic acid (DPA), a universal and specific component of bacterial spores, has been appraised for use in a rapid analytical method for the detection of low concentrations of bacterial spores. DPA was assayed by fluorimetric detection of its chelates with lanthanide metals. The influence of the choice and concentration of lanthanide and buffer ions on the fluorescence assay was studied as well as the effects of pH and temperature. The optimal system quantified the fluorescence of terbium monodipicolinate in a solution of 10 µM terbium chloride buffered with 1 M sodium acetate, pH 5.6 and had a detection limit of 2 nM DPA. This assay allowed the first real-time monitoring of the germination of bacterial spores by continuously quantifying exuded DPA. A detection limit of 104Bacillus subtilis spores ml–1 was reached, representing a substantial improvement over previous rapid tests.

Dipicolinic acid (DPA) assay revisited and appraised for spore detection

This paper describes the fabrication of a Au@SnO2 core–shell structure using the sol gel method to manufacture the sensing materials. The properties of the sensing material were analyzed with UV–vis spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The SnO2 material showed no response, whereas 1 wt% Au/SnO2 exhibited a 2.4 sensor response. The response t90 (for a result equaling 90% of the equilibrium signal) and recovery tr90 (to adjust the signal to 90% background signal) times of the 1 wt% Au/SnO2 material measured 240 s and 210 s, respectively. Au@SnO2 further enhanced the sensor response to 2.9 while reducing the response and recovery times to 80 s and 62 s. This study also demonstrates a formaldehyde gas-sensing mechanism involving HCHO adsorption and surface reaction and product desorption.
