The performance of cold rolled dual-phase (DP) steels depends on their microstructure, which results from the thermomechanical processing conditions, involving hot rolling, cold rolling, and continuous annealing. The knowledge on the influence of each annealing stage on the microstructure formation is essential for manufacturing high-quality DP steels. In the present work, the effects of some intercritical annealing parameters (heating rate, soaking temperature, soaking time, and quench temperature) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a cold rolled DP steel (0.08% C–1.91% Mn) were studied. The microstructure of specimens quenched after each annealing stage, simulated on a Gleeble, was analyzed using optical, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The tensile properties, determined for specimens submitted to complete annealing cycles, are influenced by the volume fractions of martensite, bainite, martensite/austenite (MA) constituent, and carbides, which depend on annealing processing parameters. The results obtained showed that the yield strength (YS) increase and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decrease with the increasing intercritical temperature. This can be explained by the increased formation of granular bainite associated with the increased volume fraction of austenite formed at the higher temperatures. The experimental data also showed that, for the annealing cycles carried out, UTS values in excess of 600 MPa could be obtained with the steel investigated.

The effects of gradients in the texture and microstructure of a tantalum plate on mechanical behavior are examined. In particular, the effects of variations in grain size and texture from the surface of the plate to the centerline on the yield behavior and final shape of compression samples are investigated. Individual lattice orientations were measured on samples both before and after deformation using automatic analysis of electron backscatter diffraction patterns. These data were used as input to a polycrystal plasticity model based on the Taylor assumption of uniform strain. Results are compared from experimental and simulated compression tests. The effects of the texture and grain size gradients on these results are discussed. The influence of the texture gradient was found to be the dominating factor controlling the nonuniform plastic response of the material. This work also demonstrates the capability of currently available tools for characterizing inhomogeneous microstructures and modeling the effects of variations in texture and microstructure on mechanical behavior.

Textural and microstructural gradient effects on the mechanical behavior of a tantalum plate

The processing route of grain oriented electrical sheet was simulated by laboratory trials. Besides MnS, the effect of AIN and NbC as an inhibitor phase in 3 % silicon steel was also investigated. In the hot strip material the niobium microalloyed steel showed the highest volume fraction of the {110} Goss texture at 0.3 to 0.4 mm below the surface. This superiority was maintained after cold rolling and annealing after both, one step or two step cold reduction schedules. A volume fraction of the Goss texture of more than 80 % is typical for this steel concept. It can be explained by the solubility product of NbC, which guarantees grain size control during the primary recrystallisation processes and allows the Goss texture component to grow during secondary recrystallisation, which usually follows a steel decarburisation. Consistent with the highest volume fraction of Goss texture, the core losses are lowest in the sheet using NbC as an inhibitor phase.
