Journal ArticleDOI
An Ultralightweight and Living Legged Robot
TL;DR: The robot is a living beetle with a wireless electronic backpack stimulator mounted on its thorax that employs a compliant body made of soft actuators, rigid exoskeletons, and flexure hinges to allow the robot to easily adapt to any complex terrain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intelligent Insect–Computer Hybrid Robot: Installing Innate Obstacle Negotiation and Onboard Human Detection onto Cyborg Insect
Phuoc Thanh Tran Ngoc,Bing Sheng Chong,Huu Duoc Nguyen,Van Than Dung,Feng Cao,Yao Li,Kazuki Kai,Jia Hui Gan,Vo Doan Tat Thang,Hirotaka Sato +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a cockroach hybrid robot (≈ 1.5 cm height, 5.7 cm length) was developed for urban search and rescue (USAR) applications.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Insect-machine hybrid system
Vo Doan Tat Thang,Svetoslav Kolev,Huynh Ngoc Anh,Zhang Chao,Travis L. Massey,Pieter Abbeel,Michel M. Maharbiz,Hirotaka Sato +7 more
TL;DR: The response times, success rates, and free-flight trajectories elicited by the neural control systems in remotely-controlled beetles are characterized and it is believed this type of technology will open the door to in-flight perturbation and recording of insect flight responses.
