Globally, 800 million people are malnourished. Heavily subsidised farmers in rich countries produce sufficient surplus food to feed the hungry, but not at a price the poor can afford. Even donating the rich world's surplus to the poor would not solve the problem. Most poor people earn their living from agriculture, so a deluge of free food would destroy their livelihoods. Thus, the only answer to world hunger is to safeguard and improve the productivity of farmers in poor countries. Diets of subsistence level farmers in Africa and Latin America often contain sufficient carbohydrates (through cassava, corn/maize, rice, wheat, etc.), but are poor in proteins. Dietary proteins can take the form of scarce animal products (eggs, milk, meat, etc.), but are usually derived from legumes (plants of the bean and pea family). Legumes are vital in agriculture as they form associations with bacteria that `fix-nitrogen' from the air. Effectively this amounts to internal fertilisation and is the main reason that legumes are richer in proteins than all other plants. Thousands of legume species exist but more common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are eaten than any other. In some countries such as Mexico and Brazil, beans are the primary source of protein in human diets. As half the grain legumes consumed worldwide are common beans, they represent the species of choice for the study of grain legume nutrition. Unfortunately, the yields of common beans are low even by the standards of legumes, and the quality of their seed proteins is sub-optimal. Most probably this results from millennia of selection for stable rather than high yield, and as such, is a problem that can be redressed by modern genetic techniques. We have formed an international consortium called `Phaseomics' to establish the necessary framework of knowledge and materials that will result in disease-resistant, stress-tolerant, high-quality protein and high-yielding beans. Phaseomics will be instrumental in improving living conditions in deprived regions of Africa and the Americas. It will contribute to social equity and sustainable development and enhance inter- and intra-cultural understanding, knowledge and relationships. A major goal of Phaseomics is to generate new common bean varieties that are not only suitable for but also desired by the local farmer and consumer communities. Therefore, the socio-economic dimension of improved bean production and the analysis of factors influencing the acceptance of novel varieties will be an integral part of the proposed research (see Figure 1). Here, we give an overview of the economic and nutritional importance of common beans as a food crop. Priorities and targets of current breeding programmes are outlined, along with ongoing efforts in genomics. Recommendations for an international coordinated effort to join knowledge, facilities and expertise in a variety of scientific undertakings that will contribute to the overall goal of better beans are given. Wild relatives of common wheat, Triticum aestivum, and related species are an important source of disease and pest resistance and several useful traits have been transferred from these species to wheat. C-banding and in situ hybridization analyses are powerful cytological techniques allowing the detection of alien chromatin in wheat. C-banding permits identification of the wheat and alien chromosomes involved in wheat-alien translocations, whereas genomic in situ hybridization analysis allows determination of their size and breakpoint positions. The present review summarizes the available data on wheat-alien transfers conferring resistance to diseases and pests. Ten of the 57 spontaneous and induced wheat-alien translocations were identified as whole arm translocations with the breakpoints within the centromeric regions. The majority of transfers (45) were identified as terminal translocations with distal alien segments translocated to wheat chromosome arms. Only two intercalary wheat-alien transloctions were identified, one induced by radiation treatment with a small segment of rye chromosome 6RL (H25) inserted into the long arm of wheat chromosome 4A, and the other probably induced by homoeologous recombination with a segment derived from the long arm of a group 7 Agropyron elongatum chromosome with Lr19 inserted into the long arm of 7D. The presented information should be useful for further directed chromosome engineering aimed at producing superior germplasm.

Common bean (phaseolus vulgaris l.)

Knowledge, access, and use of diversity available in cultivated and wild relatives are essential for broadening the genetic base of cultivars to sustain improvement. My objectives are to review briefly the origin, domestication, and organization of genetic diversity in Phaseolus beans, highlight production problems and traits deficient in the common bean (P. vulgaris L.) cultivars, cite sources of useful gemplasm, and review progress achieved in broadening the genetic base of cultivars. Phaseolus beans originated in the Americas. Only five species, P. acutifolius A. Gray, P. coccineus L., P. lunatus L., P. polyanthus Greenman, and P. vulgaris L. were domesticated. The interspecies diversity in relation to common bean is organized in primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary gene pools. Intraspecies diversity in common bean is separated into two major gene pools (Andean and Middle American). Cultivars are further divided into races, each with their distinguishing characteristics. Also, cultivars of dry seed and snap bean exist. Abiotic and biotic stresses limit common bean production. The genetic base of cultivars within market classes is narrow and inadequate level of resistance to common bacterial blight [caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye] and white mold [caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib) de Bary] exist in cultivars. High levels of resistance to these and other desirable traits exist in the relatives and gene pools of P. vulgaris. Early maturity, adaptation to higher latitude, upright plant type, high pod quality and seed yield, and resistance to Bean common mosaic virus (a potyvirus) andlor rust [caused by Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.:Pers.) Unger] have been bred into cultivars. However, most of the genetic variability available in the common bean races, gene pools, and wild relatives remains to be utilized. To maximize and sustain bean production, high yielding, high quality cultivars that are less dependent on water, fertilizer, pesticides, and manual labor should be developed. This need warrants sustained, comprehensive, and integrated genetic improvement, in which favorable alleles from cultivated and wild relatives are accumulated in superior cultivars. A three-tiered breeding approach involving:(i) gene introgression from alien germplasm, (ii) pyramiding favorable alleles from different sources, and (iii) simultaneous improvement of multiple traits for common bean cultivars would be the most appropriate strategies to meet theses needs.

Broadening the Genetic Base of Common Bean Cultivars

Powdery mildew resistance of Amigo wheat has been analyzed and mapped by combining F 2 segregation data with cytogenetic and storage protein analyses. It is concluded that the powdery mildew resistance of Amigo is regulated by one gene with conditioned dominance. Cytogenetic and electrophoretic analyses revealed that the complete wheat chromosome arm 1AS is missing in Amigo and has been replaced by the rye chromosome arm 1RS. No susceptible recombinant was found among 1,034 F 2 plants of crosses of Amigo with Pm3 resistant lines; Pm3 is known to be located on 1AS (...)

Chromosomal location of the powdery mildew resistance gene of Amigo wheat.

The value of intra- and interracial populations in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) needs to be determined in order to create useful genetic variation for maximizing gains from selection, broadening the genetic base of commercial cultivars, and making efficient use of available resources. Five large-seeded parents of race Nueva Granada (N), two small-seeded race Mesoamerica (M), and one medium-seeded race Durango (D) were hybridized to produce one intraracial (N x N) and three interracial (two N x M and one N x D) populations. Seventy-nine F2-derived F6 lines randomly taken from each population along with their parents were evaluated for agronomic traits and markers at Palmira and Popayan, Colombia, in 1990 and 1991. Variation for agronomic traits and for morphological, protein, and isozyme markers was larger in interracial populations than in the intraracial population. Mean seed yield of all lines as well as yield of the highest yielding line from two interracial populations were significantly higher than that of the intraracial population. The highest (≥ 0.80±0.15) heritability was recorded for 100-seed weight. Values for seed yield varied from 0.19±0.17 to 0.50±0.16. Gains from selection (at 20% selection pressure) for seed yield ranged from 3.9% to 11.4%. Seed yield was positively associated with biomass yield, pods/m2, and days to maturity, but harvest index showed negative correlations with these traits and a positive value with 100-seed weight. Polymorphism was recorded for phaseolin, lectins, protein Group-1 and protein Group-2 fractions, and six isozyme loci. Lines with indeterminate growth habit had significantly (P < 0.01) higher seed yield than lines with determinate growth habit in a Redkloud x MAM 4 population. Also, 23 other associations of markers with agronomic traits other than seed yield were recorded. Of these associations, lines with T phaseolin, the Diap1
2 allele, and lilac flower color tended to possess greater seed weight.

Characterization of agronomic traits and markers of recombinant inbred lines from intra- and interracial populations of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Progenies of a tetraploid 1BL/1RS wheat-rye translocation line, CV 256, selected from the cross ‘Cando’ x ‘Veery’, were analyzed by means of Giemsa C-banding. CV 256 is cytologically stable for the presence of the 1BL/1RS translocation but still segregating for A- and B-genome chromosomes of ‘Cando’ and ‘Veery’. In CV 256, nucleolar activity of the 1RS NOR locus is suppressed, as judged by the absence of a secondary constriction in that rye segment and the capability of organizing nucleoli. PAGE analysis of prolamins confirmed the presence of two 1RS secalins in all single seeds analyzed. SDS-PAGE analysis of reduced glutenins of single seeds indicated that some seeds contained the ‘Cando’ Glu-B1 locus (subunits 6+8), some contained the ‘Veery’ Glu-B1 locus (subunits 7+9) while others contained all four subunits, indicating that the material was heterozygous. Pm8 resistance is expressed in the tetraploid 1BL/1RS translocation line based on the reactions of six well-defined powdery mildew isolates. However, Pm8 resistance is not expressed in the hexaploid wheat cultivars ‘Olymp’, ‘Heinrich’ and ‘Florida’, which also contain the 1BL/1RS translocation. Obviously, the existence of the 1BL/1RS translocation is not a proof for the expression of the associated genes. PAGE results did not show a clear linkage between powdery mildew resistance and the presence of 1RS secalins.

Cytological characterization, powdery mildew resistance and storage protein composition of tetraploid and hexaploid 1BL/1RS wheat-rye translocation lines.

Analysis of a 10-parent diallel of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) grown at two diverse locations revealed that for enzyme lipoxidase activity, wheat and predicted macaroni pigment contents, heterosis was environmentally dependent. Both additive and dominance genetic effects were significant for each of these quality traits studied, but in one location, the additive genetic effect was consistently more pronounced than the dominance genetic effect, while the reverse was the case in the other location. There was no evidence of epistatic gene effect for any of the three characters in either location.
