Noise generated in aircraft engines is usually suppressed by acoustically treating the engine ducts. The optimization of this treatment requires an understanding of the transmission and attenuation of the acoustic waves. A critical review is presented of the state of the art regarding methods of determining the transmission and attenuation parameters and the effect on these parameters of (1) acoustic properties of liners, (2) the mean velocity, including uniform and shear profiles and nonparallel flow, (3) axial and transverse temperature gradients, (4) slowly and abruptly varying cross sections, and (5) finite-amplitude waves and nonlinear duct liners.

Acoustics of Aircraft Engine-Duct Systems

There are many technical applications in the field of lightweight construction as, for example, in aerospace engineering, where stress concentration phenomena play an important role in the design of layered structural elements (so-called laminates) consisting of plies of fiber reinforced plastics or other materials. A well known stress concentration problem rich in research tradition is the so-called free-edge effect. Mainly explained by the mismatch of the elastic material properties between two adjacent dissimilar laminate layers, the free-edge effect is characterized by the concentrated occurrence of three-dimensional and singular stress fields at the free edges in the interfaces between two layers of composite laminates. In the present contribution, a survey on relevant literature from more than three decades of scientific research on free-edge effects is given. The cited references date back to 1967 and deal with approximate closed-form analyses, as well as numerical investigations by the finite element method, the finite difference method, and several other numerical techniques. The progress in research on the stress singularities which arise is also reviewed, and references on experimental investigations are cited. Related problems are also briefly addressed. The paper closes with concluding remarks and an outlook on future investigations. In all, 292 references are included.

Free-Edge Effects in Composite Laminates

The development of computational methods in acoustics has led to the introduction of analysis and design procedures which model the turbofan inlet as a coupled system, simultaneously modeling propagation and radiation in the presence of realistic internal and external flows. Such models are generally large, require substantial computer speed and capacity, and can be expected to be used in the final design stages, with the simpler models being used in the early design iterations. Emphasis is given to practical modeling methods that have been applied to the acoustical design problem in turbofan engines. The mathematical model is established and the simplest case of propagation in a duct with hard walls is solved to introduce concepts and terminologies. An extensive overview is given of methods for the calculation of attenuation in uniform ducts with uniform flow and with shear flow. Subsequent sections deal with numerical techniques which provide an integrated representation of duct propagation and near- and far-field radiation for realistic geometries and flight conditions.
