Microfabricated integrated circuits revolutionized computation by vastly reducing the space, labor, and time required for calculations. Microfluidic systems hold similar promise for the large-scale automation of chemistry and biology, suggesting the possibility of numerous experiments performed rapidly and in parallel, while consuming little reagent. While it is too early to tell whether such a vision will be realized, significant progress has been achieved, and various applications of significant scientific and practical interest have been developed. Here a review of the physics of small volumes (nanoliters) of fluids is presented, as parametrized by a series of dimensionless numbers expressing the relative importance of various physical phenomena. Specifically, this review explores the Reynolds number Re, addressing inertial effects; the Peclet number Pe, which concerns convective and diffusive transport; the capillary number Ca expressing the importance of interfacial tension; the Deborah, Weissenberg, and elasticity numbers De, Wi, and El, describing elastic effects due to deformable microstructural elements like polymers; the Grashof and Rayleigh numbers Gr and Ra, describing density-driven flows; and the Knudsen number, describing the importance of noncontinuum molecular effects. Furthermore, the long-range nature of viscous flows and the small device dimensions inherent in microfluidics mean that the influence of boundaries is typically significant. A variety of strategies have been developed to manipulate fluids by exploiting boundary effects; among these are electrokinetic effects, acoustic streaming, and fluid-structure interactions. The goal is to describe the physics behind the rich variety of fluid phenomena occurring on the nanoliter scale using simple scaling arguments, with the hopes of developing an intuitive sense for this occasionally counterintuitive world.

Microfluidics: Fluid physics at the nanoliter scale

This article reviews acoustic microfiuidics: the use of acoustic fields, principally ultrasonics, for application in microfiuidics. Although acoustics is a classical field, its promising, and indeed perplexing, capabilities in powerfully manipulating both fluids and particles within those fluids on the microscale to nanoscale has revived interest in it. The bewildering state of the literature and ample jargon from decades of research is reorganized and presented in the context of models derived from first principles. This hopefully will make the area accessible for researchers with experience in materials science, fluid mechanics, or dynamics. The abundance of interesting phenomena arising from nonlinear interactions in ultrasound that easily appear at these small scales is considered, especially in surface acoustic wave devices that are simple to fabricate with planar lithography techniques common in microfluidics, along with the many applications in microfluidics and nanofluidics that appear through the literature.

Microscale acoustofluidics: Microfluidics driven via acoustics and ultrasonics

Basic fluid dynamic principles were used to derive a theoretical model of optimum cardiovascular allometry, the relationship between somatic and cardiovascular growth. The validity of the predicted models was then tested against the size of 22 cardiovascular structures measured echocardiographically in 496 normal children aged 1 day to 20 yr, including valves, pulmonary arteries, aorta and aortic branches, pulmonary veins, and left ventricular volume. Body surface area (BSA) was found to be a more important determinant of the size of each of the cardiovascular structures than age, height, or weight alone. The observed vascular and valvar dimensions were in agreement with values predicted from the theoretical models. Vascular and valve diameters related linearly to the square root of BSA, whereas valve and vascular areas related to BSA. The relationship between left ventricular volume and body size fit a complex model predicted by the nonlinear decrease of heart rate with growth. Overall, the relationship between cardiac output and body size is the fundamental driving factor in cardiovascular allometry.

Theoretical and empirical derivation of cardiovascular allometric relationships in children

▪ Abstract The relationship between flow in the arteries, particularly the wall shear stresses, and the sites where atherosclerosis develops has motivated much of the research on arterial flow in recent decades. It is now well accepted that it is sites where shear stresses are low, or change rapidly in time or space, that are most vulnerable. These conditions are likely to prevail at places where the vessel is curved; bifurcates; has a junction, a side branch, or other sudden change in flow geometry; and when the flow is unsteady. These flows, often but not always involving flow separation or secondary motions, are also the most difficult ones in fluid mechanics to analyze or compute. In this article we review the modeling studies and experiments on steady and unsteady, two-and three-dimensional flows in arteries, and in arterial geometries most relevant in the context of atherosclerosis. The potential industrial applications of curved tubes for single- and two-phase flow are reviewed within the context of physics of flow, trends in the development of technology, and its laboratory to industrial-scale commercialization. Comparison of the performance of curved tube configurations demonstrates its edge over the conventional motionless mixers, heat exchangers, and reactors. Alongside, their respective advantages and limitations are also highlighted. Further, a compendium of the available correlations for single- and two-phase friction factor and heat- and mass-transfer coefficient in curved tubes has also been presented. Key issues regarding the design parameters governing the performance of the curved tubes for mixing and heat- and mass-transfer that impact the research, development, and scale-up or scale-down of such devices are also analyzed. Emerging trends for the development of a new class of curved tubes, namely, inverters and serpentine and chaotic devices are also presented.

A Review on the Potential Applications of Curved Geometries in Process Industry

The flow in a pipe of circular cross-section which is coiled in a circle is studied, the pressure gradient along the pipe varying sinusoidally in time with frequency . The radius of the pipe a is assumed small in relation to the radius of curvature of its axis R. Of special interest is the secondary flow generated by centrifugal effects in the plane of the cross-section of the pipe, and an asymptotic theory is developed for small values of the parameter = (2/a2), where is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The secondary flow is found to be governed by a Reynolds number , where is a typical velocity along the axis of the pipe, and asymptotic theories are developed for both small and large values of this parameter. For sufficiently small values of it is found that the secondary flow in the interior of the pipe is in the opposite sense to that predicted for a steady pressure gradient, and this is verified qualitatively by an experiment described at the end of the paper.
