This volume contains the results of the Manchester Benchmarking exercise for railway vehicle dynamics simulation packages. Five of the main computer packages currently used for this purpose were examined in the exercise and the results are presented in the form of tables and graphs.

The Manchester Benchmarks for Rail Vehicle Simulation

The following paper describes a general conception and realization of a computer package to predict some aspects of dynamic behaviour of railway vehicles. The package consists of three parts, an interactive pre-processor, the analysis program and an interactive post-processor. MATLAB was used as environment for the realization of the package. In recent versions only passenger vehicles, which have a MD 52 (Minden-Deutz) type trucks, can be analysed but the pre- and post-processor have a general form.

Simulation of rail vehicle dynamics in matlab environment.

Two simple vehicles and four matching track cases are presented to allow comparison of the capabilities of the various computer simulation packages currently being used to model the dynamic behaviour of railway vehicles. The benchmarks presented here were agreed at the International Workshop on COMPUTER SIMULATION OF RAIL VEHICLE DYNAMICS at Manchester Metropolitan University on June 23rd and 24th 1997.

The Manchester Benchmarks for rail simulators - an introduction

This paper presents some aspects of modeling of dynamic interaction between conventional railway car and track, taking mechanical imperfections into consideration. The imperfections may relate to deviations of geometric parameters against their nominal values or shapes. In this approach, the deviations are described for the single standard turnout and for the wheelsets of the railway car. In order to appreciate the imperfections, the mathematical model and computer package have been elaborated. The package collaborates with the Matlab-Simulink environment. Several simulation results are presented to recommend the usability of the approach. They imply a conclusion that specific turnout parameters and analyzed deviations of some of them create a vital cause of the dynamic interaction growth between vehicle and track. Dynamic response to mechanical imperfections is shown with the aid of wheel-rail forces.

Comparing Multibody Computer Software Systems in a Vehicle Dynamics context is desirable but difficult. The qualities to be tested are many and include the ability both to model specific features of systems and obtain specific forms of solution. One of several means of comparison is through benchmark testing (or benchmarking). This involves: (1) the design of test problems; (2) the solution of the test problems; (3) comparison of solutions and procedures; and (4) reporting. The process implies the need for: a) some central organisation, which was effectively set up in the year 1990); b) some participants; and c) much exchange of information. This paper records the process of benchmarking, with a view to making it more effective and more efficient in the future. For the covering abstract see IRRD 860691.
