Fundamentals of Liquid Crystal Devices

Electric-field-induced birefringence of a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) is investigated In the low field region, conventional Kerr effect holds As the electric field increases, the induced birefringence gradually saturates and deviates from Kerr effect An exponential convergence model, called extended Kerr effect, is proposed to fit the experimental data Good agreement between experiment and model is obtained This extended Kerr effect will make a significant impact to the optimization of emerging BPLC display devices

Extended Kerr effect of polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystals

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the quadratic electro-optic effect in KDP is presented. By means of electromagnetic theory an eigenvector approach is employed to account for the quadratic electro-optic effect and also to estimate the contribution of the linear electro-optic effect to the quadratic response of the crystal. A simple method of measuring the coefficient g1212 in uniaxial crystals is described. Its value was found to be nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than the value measured earlier; however, it is comparable with the coefficient g1111 - g1122 reported recently.

On the quadratic electro-optic effect in KDP

Electro-optic coefficients can be defined in terms of the changes, which result from an applied electric field, to components of either the impermeability or electric susceptibility tensors. In this paper exact relationships are derived between electro-optic coefficients defined in these two ways for powers of the field up to four. Previously known approximate relationships are also discussed.

On relationships between electro-optic coefficients for impermeability and nonlinear electric susceptibilities

Polymer‐Stabilized Blue Phase Liquid Crystals

The sixth-rank tensor K describing the nonlinear electro-optical fourth-order effect has been calculated. A relationship between the non-zero components of the above tensor for all 32 crystallographic classes is shown. The calculations were executed with the aid of a tensor function describing the dependence of the dielectrical impermeability tensor on the electrical field tensor. It has been shown that changes in the optical properties of crystals due to the fourth-order electro-optical effect are similar to those brought about by the Kerr effect.
