The study of storage and retrieval methods of software assets in software libraries gives rise to a number of paradoxes: While this subject has been under investigation for nearly two decades, it still remains an active area of research in software reuse and software engineerings this can be explained by the observation that new technologies (such as the internet, the world wide web, objectdoriented programming) keep opening new opportunities for better asset packaging, better library organizations, and larger scale libraries – thereby posing new technical challenges. Also, while many sophisticated solutions have been proposed to this problem, the state of the practice in software reuse is characterized by the use of addhoc, lowdtech methodss this can be explained by the observation that most existing solutions are either too ineffective to be useful or too intractable to be usable. Finally, while it is difficult to imagine a successful software reuse program without a sophisticated, welldtuned, systematic procedure for software component storage and retrieval, it seems many successful software reuse experiments rely on trivial methods of component storage and retrievals this can be explained by the observation that, in the current state of the practice, software libraries are not the bottleneck of the software reuse process. This paper presents a survey of methods of storage and retrieval of software assets in software libraries. In addition to a review of existing research efforts, the paper makes two contributions. First, a definition of (presumably) orthogonal attributes of storage and retrieval methodss these attributes are used, in turn, to classify existing methods into six broad classes. Second, a definition of (presumably) orthogonal assessment criteria, which include technical, managerial and human factorss these criteria afford us an exhaustive and uniform basis for assessing and comparing individual methods and classes of methods.

A survey of software reuse libraries

The development of large scale integration (LSI) testing is reviewed. The paper concentrates on the testing of logic components and presents in-depth discussions of the methods of fault modeling, test pattern generation, fault simulation, and design for testability. It is shown how these methods are used in the design of components and how they can be used in support of design automation. Finally, a brief account of test equipment and test data preparation is given.

Human Factors and Success in Space Transportation

Accuracy (and hence calibration) is a key requirement of safety-critical IoT (SC-IoT) systems. Calibration workflows involve a number of parties such as device users, manufacturers, calibration facilities and NMIs who must collaborate but may also compete (mutually untrusting). For instance, a surgical robot manufacturer may wish to hide the identities of third-parties from the operator (hospital), in order to maintain confidentiality of business relationships around its robot products. Thus, information flows that reveal who-calibrates-for-whom need to be managed to ensure confidentiality. Similarly, meta-information about what-is-being-calibrated and how-often-it-is-calibrated may compromise operational confidentiality of a deployment. We show that the challenge of managing information flows between the parties involved in calibration cannot be met by any of the classical access control models, as any one of them, or a simple conjunction of a subset such as the lattice model, fails to meet the desired access control requirements. We demonstrate that a new unified access control model that combines BIBA, BLP, and Chinese Walls holds rich promise. We study the case for unification, system properties, and develop an XACML-based authorisation framework which enforces the unified model. We show that upon evaluation against a baseline simple-conjunction of the three models individually, our unified model outperforms with authorisation times at least 10ms lower than the baseline. This demonstrates it is capable of solving the novel access control challenges thrown up by digital-calibration workflows.

Workshop Report: Putting a Maturing Technology to Work

This special issue on the business of applying microelectronic components (commonly lumped under the term "microprocessors") is dedicated to the proposition that the LSI microelectronics generation is now replacing the MSI TTL generation for the vast majority of applications for electronic control and intelligence. With this transition, the skills repertoire formerly attributed to the "systems man" must now be acquired by the "LSI components man." In effect, the systems engineering chore has moved one step closer to the device engineer.
