When continents rift to form new ocean basins, the rifting is sometimes accompanied by massive igneous activity. We show that the production of magmatically active rifted margins and the effusion of flood basalts onto the adjacent continents can be explained by a simple model of rifting above a thermal anomaly in the underlying mantle. The igneous rocks are generated by decompression melting of hot asthenospheric mantle as it rises passively beneath the stretched and thinned lithosphere. Mantle plumes generate regions beneath the lithosphere typically 2000 km in diameter with temperatures raised 100–200°C above normal. These relatively small mantle temperature increases are sufficient to cause the generation of huge quantities of melt by decompression: an increase of 100°C above normal doubles the amount of melt whilst a 200°C increase can quadruple it. In the first part of this paper we develop our model to predict the effects of melt generation for varying amounts of stretching with a range of mantle temperatures. The melt generated by decompression migrates rapidly upward, until it is either extruded as basalt flows or intruded into or beneath the crust. Addition of large quantities of new igneous rock to the crust considerably modifies the subsidence in rifted regions. Stretching by a factor of 5 above normal temperature mantle produces immediate subsidence of more than 2 km in order to maintain isostatic equilibrium. If the mantle is 150°C or more hotter than normal, the same amount of stretching results in uplift above sea level. Melt generated from abnormally hot mantle is more magnesian rich than that produced from normal temperature mantle. This causes an increase in seismic velocity of the igneous rocks emplaced in the crust, from typically 6.8 km/s for normal mantle temperatures to 7.2 km/s or higher. There is a concomitant density increase. In the second part of the paper we review volcanic continental margins and flood basalt provinces globally and show that they are always related to the thermal anomaly created by a nearby mantle plume. Our model of melt generation in passively upwelling mantle beneath rifting continental lithosphere can explain all the major rift-related igneous provinces. These include the Tertiary igneous provinces of Britain and Greenland and the associated volcanic continental margins caused by opening of the North Atlantic in the presence of the Iceland plume; the Parana and parts of the Karoo flood basalts together with volcanic continental margins generated when the South Atlantic opened; the Deccan flood basalts of India and the Seychelles-Saya da Malha volcanic province created when the Seychelles split off India above the Reunion hot spot; the Ethiopian and Yemen Traps created by rifting of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region above the Afar hot spot; and the oldest and probably originally the largest flood basalt province of the Karoo produced when Gondwana split apart. New continental splits do not always occur above thermal anomalies in the mantle caused by plumes, but when they do, huge quantities of igneous material are added to the continental crust. This is an important method of increasing the volume of the continental crust through geologic time.

Submarine Thermal Springs on the Galápagos Rift

Large igneous provinces (LIPs) are a continuum of voluminous iron and magnesium rich rock emplacements which include continental flood basalts and associated intrusive rocks, volcanic passive margins, oceanic plateaus, submarine ridges, seamount groups, and ocean basin flood basalts Such provinces do not originate at “normal” seafloor spreading centers We compile all known in situ LIPs younger than 250 Ma and analyze dimensions, crustal structures, ages, and emplacement rates of representatives of the three major LIP categories: Ontong Java and Kerguelen-Broken Ridge oceanic plateaus, North Atlantic volcanic passive margins, and Deccan and Columbia River continental flood basalts Crustal thicknesses range from 20 to 40 km, and the lower crust is characterized by high (70-76 km s?1) compressional wave velocities Volumes and emplacement rates derived for the two giant oceanic plateaus, Ontong Java and Kerguelen, reveal short-lived pulses of increased global production; Ontong Java’s rate of emplacement may have exceeded the contemporaneous global production rate of the entire mid-ocean ridge system The major part of the North Atlantic volcanic province lies offshore and demonstrates that volcanic passive margins belong in the global LIP inventory Deep crustal intrusive companions to continental flood volcanism represent volumetrically significant contributions to the crust We envision a complex mantle circulation which must account for a variety of LIP sizes, the largest originating in the lower mantle and smaller ones developing in the upper mantle This circulation coexists with convection associated with plate tectonics, a complicated thermal structure, and at least four distinct geochemical/isotopic reservoirs LIPs episodically alter ocean basin, continental margin, and continental geometries and affect the chemistry and physics of the oceans and atmosphere with enormous potential environmental impact Despite the importance of LIPs in studies of mantle dynamics and global environment, scarce age and deep crustal data necessitate intensified efforts in seismic imaging and scientific drilling in a range of such features

Large igneous provinces: crustal structure, dimensions, and external consequences

The petrogenesis of trondhjemite-tonalite-dacite (TTD) involves all major petrologic models in various tectonic settings. A specific subtype of TTD, high-Al type, is the one most commonly associated with Archean gneiss terranes. During the Archean, continental crust formation was operating at an elevated rate relative to the Phanerozoic, and the generation of high-Al TTD played an integral role in its nucleation and growth. High heat flow, rapid convection, and subduction of hotter, smaller plates were unique tectonic elements to the Archean which optimized conditions required for transformation of subducted oceanic crust into sial via partial melting. Anatexis of Archean mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) under eclogitic to garnet amphibolitic conditions produced weakly peraluminous to metaluminous high-Al TTD with low heavy rare earth elements (HREE), Y, Nb, K/Rb, and Rb/Sr and high La/Yb and Sr/Y. This study demonstrates that Archean TTD crustal generation processes are also present in selected high-Al Phanerozoic TTD terranes. The Cenozpic high-Al TTD suites are commonly found in tectonic settings which are thought to recreate the elevated Archean thermal gradients, i.e., at sites of young, hot oceanic plate subduction. These relationships imply a petrologic continuity of TTD generation through time. A fertile zone of melting is envisioned at 23–26 kbar (75–85 km) and 700–775°C, where wet partial melting of the subducting slab occurs concurrently with dehydration reactions. At this depth, the converting mantle wedge continuously feeds hot mantle material to the wedge-slab interface, creating strong temperature gradients, intraslab fluid migration, and slab melting. In summary, in modern arc terranes where young ( 30 Ma) oceanic crust is subducted, mantle-derived magmas are dominant, giving rise to basaltandesite-dacite-rhyolite (BADR) fractionation suites. This study introduces the importance of subducted oceanic crustal age on arc petrogenesis.

A model for Trondhjemite-Tonalite-Dacite Genesis and crustal growth via slab melting: Archean to modern comparisons

The ophiolitic rocks of E. Liguria, Italy contain a „spilitic” metamorphic assemblage sequence, cross-cut by hydrothermal veins, which developed in the oceanic environment. Metamorphic parageneses indicate that temperatures as high as ∼400°C were realised at depths as shallow as 300 m below the original rock/water interface. The inferred temperature interval was equivalent to a geothermal gradient of ∼1300°C/km. It is suggested that metamorphism took place in a sub-sea-floor geothermal system, and that such systems are an integral part of the sea-floor spreading process. Modern evidence is provided to support this hypothesis, and to suggest that heavy metal rich solutions discharged from such systems are responsible for the formation of a metal enriched sedimentary component. A unified model of sub-sea-floor metamorphism and mass transfer is proposed, and possible differences between sub-sea-floor and terrestial geothermal systems are discussed. In the light of the model, the origins of certain aspects of bedded cherts found associated with ophiolitic rocks, of ophiolitic massive sulphide deposits and of certain trace element patterns are considered.

Sub-sea-floor metamorphism, heat and mass transfer

The densities of mantle magmas such as MORB-like tholeiites, picrites, and komatiites at 10 kilobars are greater than densities for diorites, quartz diorites, granodiorites, and granites which dominate the continental crust. Because of these density relations primary magmas from the mantle will tend to underplate the base of the continental crust. Magmas ranging in composition from tholeiites which are more evolved than MORB to andesite can have densities which are less than rocks of the continental crust at 10 kilobars, particularly if they have high water contents. The continental crust can thus be a density filter through which only evolved magmas containing H2O may pass. This explains why primary magmas from the mantle such as the picrites are so rare. Both the over-accretion (i.e., Moho penetration) and the under-accretion (i.e., Moho underplating) of magmas can readily explain complexities in the lithological characteristics of the continental Moho and lower crust. Underplating of the continental crust by dense magmas may perturb the geotherm to values which are characteristic of those in granulite to greenschist facies metamorphic sequences in orogenic belts. An Archean continental crust floating on top of a magma flood or ocean of tholeiite to komatiite could have undergone a major cleansing process; dense blocks of peridotite, greenstone, and high density sediments such as iron formation could have been returned to the mantle, granites sweated to high crustal levels, and a high grade felsic basement residue established.

Density constraints on the formation of the continental Moho and crust

Low grade hydrothermally metamorphosed ophiolitic basic rocks from E. Liguria (Italy), Pindos (Greece) and Troodos (Cyprus) are enriched in O18 relative to the oxygen isotope ratio of fresh basalt (6.0±0.5‰). The maximum observed δO18 value of +13.22‰ corresponds to a positive isotope shift of 7‰ Enrichments in Sr87 relative to Sr86 correlate with hydrothermal alteration. The δC13 values of secondary calcite from E. Liguria are positive, and fall in the range from +0.2% to +3.6‰ Since ophiolitic rocks are considered to be fragments of the oceanic crust and upper mantle, and since the secondary metamorphic assemblages were produced before mechanical emplacement, it is considered that the hydrothermal metamorphism which affected these rocks occurred in the sub-sea-floor environment. The isotope data are directly consistent with the hypothesis that the alteration was produced by interaction of the basaltic material with introduced sea water. Water: rock ratios were sufficiently large to produce the observed isotope shifts. In the Troodos ophiolite sequence δO18 values decrease steadily downwards and change to progressively larger depletions in the Sheeted Intrusive Complex. The trend of δO18 decrease correlates with the original direction of increasing temperature. The O18 depletions, which have also been observed for oceanic “greenstones” (Muehlenbachs and Clayton, 1972b), resulted from water/rock interaction at temperatures greater than the particular temperature range above which whole rock-water fractionations became less than the isotopic difference between fresh basalt and sea water. Since this isotope geochemistry indicates that the water responsible for hydrothermal metamorphism was of sea water origin, the data support the more general hypothesis that convection of sea water within the upper 4–5 kms of the oceanic crust is a massive and active process at oceanic ridges. This process may be completely or partially responsible for (a.i.), the local scatter and low mean value of the conductive heat flux measured near ridges, (a.ii), the transfer of considerable quantities of heat from spreading oceanic ridges, (b) hydrothermal metamorphism, metasomatism and mineralization of oceanic crust, (c), the production of metal enriched, relatively reduced brines during sea water/basalt interaction, d), the high degree of scatter and low mean value of the compressional wave velocities of oceanic basement layer 2 and (e), the low natural remanent magnetization (NRM) intensity of the lower part of layer 2 and upper part of layer 3 of oceanic crust.

Metabasalts subjected to progressive deformation in large-scale shear zones at Yellowknife display corresponding changes in major element abundances. Deformation, under conditions of greenschist facies metamorphism, has involved grain size reduction from 1200 μm to <20 μm, depletion of SiO2 (≃5%) and Na2O, together with hydration, and a decrease in specific gravity from 2.97 to 2.80. Chemical redistribution by deformation has been accomplished through a decrease in grain diameter of quartz and albite by intercrystalline diffusive mass transport (pressure solution), with concomitant transfer of material into extension veins. The degree of chemical modification is related to the finite strain. Deformation has involved a redistribution of ∼7.1015g of SiO2 over a volume of about 50km3.

Local modification of rock chemistry by deformation

Sea floor rhyolites from the Iberian Pyrite Belt show strong enrichment in potassium and adularia is observed to replace plagioclase. This process is in accord with thermodynamic data for the exchange reaction with ocean water which favours adularia up to about 140° C. Archaean felsic intrusives and extrusives exhibit sodium enrichment, a contrast which we attribute to lower K levels in sea water and, or, higher ocean temperatures. All of these rocks show 18O enrichment of + 6 to + 8‰, in compliance with low temperature sea water exchange.
