Methods for early characterisation of the severity and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 variants: a population-based time series analysis in South Africa
Emily Reichert,B. Schaeffer,Shae Gantt,Eva Rumpler,N. Govender,Richard Welch,A.M. Shonhiwa,Chidozie Declan Iwu,T. Lamola,Itumeleng Moema-Matiea,Darren Muganhiri,William P. Hanage,Mauricio Santillana,Waasila Jassat,Cheryl Cohen,David L. Swerdlow +15 more
TL;DR: This population-level time series analysis method, which calculates an optimal lag interval that is then used to inform the numerator of severity metrics including the case-hospitalisation and case-fatality ratio, provides useful and timely estimates of the relative effects of novel SARS-CoV-2 VOCs, especially for application in settings where resources are limited.
Journal ArticleDOI
COVID-19 in long-term care facilities in South Africa: No time for complacency.
Beverley Cowper,Waasila Jassat,P J Pretorius,Leon Geffen,Civil Legodu,Sandhya Singh,Lucille Blumberg +6 more
Journal ArticleDOI
‘We had to manage what we had on hand, in whatever way we could’: adaptive responses in policy for decentralized drug-resistant tuberculosis care in South Africa
Karina Kielmann,Lindy Dickson-Hall,Waasila Jassat,Sacha le Roux,Mosa Moshabela,Helen Cox,Alison D. Grant,Alison D. Grant,Alison D. Grant,Marian Loveday,Jeremy Hill,Jeremy Hill,Mark P. Nicol,Mark P. Nicol,Koleka Mlisana,John Black +15 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that a useful extension of health systems ‘readiness’ assessments would include definition and evaluation of HCW ‘software’ and adaptive capacities in the face of systems hardware gaps.
Journal ArticleDOI
A call to action: Temporal trends of COVID-19 deaths in the South African Muslim community
TL;DR: This letter by Omar on letter by Jassat et al .
Journal ArticleDOI
Drug-resistant tuberculosis patient care journeys in South Africa: a pilot study using routine laboratory data.
Jeremy Hill,Lindy Dickson-Hall,Alison D. Grant,C Grundy,John Black,Karina Kielmann,Koleka Mlisana,L. Mitrani,Marian Loveday,Mosa Moshabela,S Le Roux,Waasila Jassat,Mark P. Nicol,Helen Cox +13 more
TL;DR: Routine laboratory data can be used to explore DR-TB patient healthcare journeys and show how the use of healthcare services forDR-TB varies in different settings, according to a pilot study in South Africa.
