Pretreatments to enhance the digestibility of lignocellulosic biomass

This Handbook aims to provide a guide for constructing and using composite indicators for policy makers, academics, the media and other interested parties. While there are several types of composite indicators, this Handbook is concerned with those which compare and rank country performance in areas such as industrial competitiveness, sustainable development, globalisation and innovation. The Handbook aims to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of composite indicators and to an improvement of the techniques currently used to build them. In particular, it contains a set of technical guidelines that can help constructors of composite indicators to improve the quality of their outputs. It has been prepared jointly by the OECD (the Statistics Directorate and the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry) and the Applied Statistics and Econometrics Unit of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy. Primary authors from the JRC are Michela Nardo, Michaela Saisana, Andrea Saltelli and Stefano Tarantola. Primary authors from the OECD are Anders Hoffmann and Enrico Giovannini. Editorial assistance was provided by Candice Stevens, Gunseli Baygan and Karsten Olsen. Using various methods, the size of the shadow economy in 76 developing, transition, and OECD countries is estimated. Average size varies from 12 percent of GDP for OECD countries, to 23 percent for transition countries and 39 percent for developing countries. Increasing taxation and social security contributions combined with rising state regulations are driving forces for the increase of the shadow economy, especially in OECD countries. According to some findings, corruption has a positive impact on the size of the shadow economy, and a growing shadow economy has a negative effect on official GDP growth.

Physical, chemical and electrochemical properties of pure and doped ceria

NUMBERS 16 and 17 in the Advances series have made their appearance. The titles are: "A Key to Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry Literature" and "Training of literature Chemists." The first is a collection of papers presented before the Divisions of Chemical Literature and Medicinal Chemistry; the second consists of papers given before a joint meeting of the Divisions of Chemical Education and Chemical Literature. Glancing at the titles of subjects covered to date in the Advances series, it becomes evident that a substantial literature is being built by literature chemists, largely through the divisions in the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. Number 4, "Searching the Chemical Literature," has been reprinted several times and frequently is referred to as the "bible" of literature chemists. Number 10, "Literature Resources for Chemical Process Industries," is in much demand.
