A display system includes a substrate upon which the display system is fabricated; a printable electrooptic display material, such as a microencapsulated electrophoretic suspension; electrodes (typically based on a transparent, conductive ink) arranged in an intersecting pattern to allow specific elements or regions of the display material to be addressed; insulating layers, as necessary, deposited by printing; and an array of nonlinear elements that facilitate matrix addressing. The nonlinear devices may include printed, particulate Schottky diodes, particulate PN diodes, particulate varistor material, silicon films formed by chemical reduction, or polymer semiconductor films. All elements of the display system may be deposited using a printing process.

In a UV high-power radiator, the electrodes (6', 6") consist of wires embedded in a glass dielectric (3). The dielectric is arranged spaced between two UV-transparent sheets (1, 2). The discharge spaces (8, 9) are filled with a filler gas emitting radiation under discharge conditions. The surface discharges (10) form on the dielectric surface in each case between two adjacent electrode wires (6', 6"). A high-power radiator constructed in this manner is characterized by simple and economical construction and high UV yield.

In an example embodiment, an electrodeless plasma lamp is provided which comprises a lamp body comprising a dielectric material having a relative permittivity greater than 2, and a bulb adjacent to the lamp body, the bulb containing a fill that forms a plasma when RF power is coupled to the fill from the lamp body. An RF feed is coupled to the lamp body and a radio frequency (RF) power source for coupling power into the lamp body through the RF feed is provided. A shortest distance between an end of the bulb and a point on the RF feed traverses at least one electrically conductive material of the lamp body.

An oscillator includes an amplifier having an input and an output, a feedback network connected between the input of the amplifier and the output of the amplifier, the feedback network being configured to provide suitable positive feedback from the output of the amplifier to the input of the amplifier to initiate and sustain an oscillating condition, and a tuning circuit connected to the input of the amplifier, wherein the tuning circuit is continuously variable and consists of solid state electrical components with no mechanically adjustable devices including a pair of diodes connected to each other at their respective cathodes with a control voltage connected at the junction of the diodes. Another oscillator includes an amplifier having an input and an output, a feedback network connected between the input of the amplifier and the output of the amplifier, the feedback network being configured to provide suitable positive feedback from the output of the amplifier to the input of the amplifier to initiate and sustain an oscillating condition, and transmission lines connected to the input of the amplifier with an input pad and a perpendicular transmission line extending from the input pad and forming a leg of a resonant “T”, and wherein the feedback network is coupled to the leg of the resonant “T”.

A high frequency reaction processing system comprising an outer container ( 40 ) made of a dielictric material and having two end faces, which can close the inner cavity, one or more high frequency wave coupling portion ( 42 ) disposed at arbitrary position on the outer surface of the outer container ( 40 ), one or more inner container ( 41 ) made of a dielectric material and having two end faces, which can closeg the inner cavity, disposed at a position for receiving a high frequency wave guided through the high frequency wave coupling portion ( 42 ) without touching the inner side face of the outer container ( 40 ), and a covering portion ( 43 ) made of a conductive material, for covering the outer surface of the outer container except for the area occupied with the high frequency wave coupling portion ( 42 ) and sustaining the potential at a level equal to the ground potential of a waveguide line.

An electrodeless lamp may be formed with a capsule having a radiant energy transmissive material defining an approximately cylindrical enclosed volume having an external length less than 20.0 millimeters, and an outer diameter less than 8.0 millimeters. The enclosed volume is filled with a lamp fill excitable by a high frequency electromagnetic field to produce radiant energy. The small size capsule produces a particularly efficient, orientation tolerant arc discharge. The arc is then highly stable as to position, yielding a good optical source to design for. The temperature gradient is small, thereby yielding little thermal strew on the capsule. An electrodeless HID headlamp system may be formed with the efficient capsule from a radio frequency source operating from a the power supply of a typical automobile. The headlamp system includes a high frequency power source, a transmission line, a coupler, an excitable lamp fill captured in a lamp capsule, a reflector and a lens.

A high intensity discharge (HID) lamp includes a starting gas, a vaporizable fill, and only one electrode sealed within a light transmissive envelope. The one electrode produces a high intensity discharge during operation of the lamp and is connected to an inlead that extends outside the sealed envelope. A ground for electric field lines emanating from the electrode during operation of the lamp is outside the envelope. The ground may be a reflector for the lamp that has an electrically conductive surface. The high intensity discharge is initiated by applying high frequency power to the inlead.

A rapidly converging iterative method based on deconvolution techniques is proposed for the computation of the inverse Abel transform. The calculations only involve repeated applications of the forward Abel transform and no derivatives are needed. The iterative method is shown to be less susceptible to noise amplification when compared with other techniques.

A termination fixture for an electrodeless lamp has dimensions which match the output impedance of a coupled high frequency power source to the real impedance of the lamp when in a discharge condition. The fixture may consist of a pair of coaxial conductors, and the lamp forms the termination load for the ends of the conductors. The length of the conductors is such as to place the lamp one quarter wavelength from the opposite ends of the conductors. The diameters of the conductors are such as to produce a fixture characteristic impedance which matches the lamp impedance to the source output impedance.

Electrodeless light source

A compact fluorescent lamp has an outer envelope in which there is supported a capsule containing a mercury-free fill comprised of aluminum trichloride. The fill is energized to produce a plasma discharge which emits ultraviolet and visible radiation. Phosphor, in the form of a particulate layer or a gas, converts the ultraviolet into visible light. The lamp may contain electrodes or be electrodeless. In the electrodeless embodiment RF energy may be capacitively or inductively coupled to the fill.
