The Uses Of Argument

In many instances, negative attitudes towards writing as well as other language learning problems have been linked to ESL students’ poor performance in writing. The study investigates ESL tertiary students’ writing attitude and the learning problems they face in BEL 311 writing course at MARA University of Technology. The participants in the study were 60 Part Three Diploma students taking BEL 311 course, and 4 writing instructors who have been teaching this course for more than 5 years. The students were given a set of needs analysis questionnaires, and the lecturers were interviewed. In addition, both groups of participants were asked to describe the important elements which they perceive as useful for a supplementary online writing program. The results indicate that the lecturers felt the majority of the students have negative attitude towards writing as they would procrastinate. They are also careless and dislike writing.  The findings from the participants also revealed that they perceive writing in English as difficult and they dislike it. In addition, both groups of participants also perceive that the students’ learning problems, which affect their writing quality, include the lack of practice time being allocated in class, dull writing activities and the lack of emphasis towards critical thinking in their writing course. Furthermore, they suggested that a special online writing program which can act as a supplement for the course and help to enhance the learners’ writing ability and interest.

ESL Students’ Attitude, Learning Problems, And Needs For Online Writing

This study investigates the use of SOWLR (Selected Online Writing Resources) among ESL Tertiary level students who were taking a General English proficiency course known as BEL 200 at MARA University of Technology Malaysia. SOWLR is part of the online writing elements provided for the students using a LMS (Learning Management System). Specifically, the study looks at the ways SOWLR was able to increase the students' writing interest as well as change their negative attitude towards learning to write essays to positive ones.

The use of students' personal self-reflective blog for academic writing activities among esl tertiary level students

The present study is carried out to investigate the effectiveness and problems in writing an academic paper faced by medical students undergoing the English for Academic Reading and Writing (UB00402) paper offered by Pusat Penataran Ilmu dan Bahasa (PPIB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Writing an academic paper is compulsory for all undergraduates. An academic paper is not easy to produce because it has a few requirements to fulfill. This study employs a content analysis method in investigating the project paper; i.e., academic paper written by the undergraduate students based on the UB00402 course module taught. A convenient sampling of 27 English for Academic for Reading and Writing medical students in Semester 2, session 2008/2009, was involved. The study was conducted for a period of fourteen weeks. Besides the use of elements of an academic paper, the use of language was also analysed. A questionnaire was distributed to gather data regarding students’ background and their comments on the teaching and learning of academic writing and the course as a whole. The findings showed that the majority of the students found the course beneficial to them in learning how to write an academic paper but conceded that the main problem in writing was grammar and vocabulary. The content analysis showed that in the writing aspect, the writing of the background and supporting details with proper in-text citation seems to be a difficult task for them and in the language aspect, they were weak in paraphrasing.

Learning to write an academic paper among medical students of universiti malaysia sabah

In Malaysian universities, writing in English is taught in several settings: writing for general purposes, writing for academic purposes and writing for specific purposes. Writing in these settings allows learners to learn to write in different genres, such as research, reports, and persuasive writing genres. One of the standard genres is persuasive because it is used to convince readers of what is researched or reported. To be competent in persuading or arguing, using the appropriate rhetorical and linguistic structure is crucial. The appropriate rhetorical and linguistic elements will help to achieve the writers' objective and intention. This paper will examine rhetorical and linguistic structures used by the ESL writers in producing a persuasive essay. Fifteen persuasive essays written by tertiary learners were analysed in this study. The researchers employed Stephen Toulmin's Model of argument (1969) as the tool of analysis in identifying the rhetorical and linguistic structures realised in the students' essays. The analysis outcome indicates that the 15 ESL writers under investigation comply with Toulmin's model except for the rebuttal stage, which was not visible in the essays. The findings will explain the common and uncommon rhetorical and linguistic elements used based on the model that Toulmin has developed. The implications from the findings are twofold; first, academic writing teachers can focus on the necessary elements to produce competent persuasive ESL writers, and secondly, textbook developers may produce their books based on the findings drawn from this study.

Analysing ESL Persuasive Essay Writing Using Toulmin’s Model of Argument

Many higher education institutions are aware of the importance of preparing their students for employment. The employment rate reflects the institutions’ credibility since logically education increases productivity and this relates to job performance. This present research was conducted to evaluate undergraduates’ knowledge and readiness towards workplace communication. It focuses on generic writing skills as well as language skills in general and also workplace documents. A survey using questionnaire was conducted among second year agriculture students taking English for Employment module at a public university in Malaysia. The results indicated that graduates are aware of most of the generic and language skills required but some are not confident of their abilities. The result from this research will benefit academics who are teaching finishing schools or courses related to preparing undergraduates for the workplace.
