BIM applications toward key performance indicators of construction projects in Iran

Achieving project objectives in constructionprojects such as time, cost and quality is a challenging task. Minimizing project cost often results in additional project duration and might jeopardize quality, and minimizing project duration often results in additional cost and might jeopardize quality. Also, increasing construction quality often results in additional cost and time. The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze trade-offs among the project objectives of time, cost and quality.,The optimization model adopted a quantitative research method and is developed in two main steps formulation step that focuses on identifying model decision variables and formulating objective functions, and implementation step that executes the model computations using multi-objective optimization of Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms to identify the aforementioned trade-offs, and codes the model using python. The model performance is verified and tested using a case study of construction project consisting of 20 activities.,The model was able to show practical and needed value for construction managers by identifying various trade-off solutions between the project objectives of time, cost and quality. For example, the model was able to identify the shortest project duration at 84 days while keeping cost under $440,000 and quality higher than 85 percent. However, with an additional budget of $20,000 (4.5 percent increase), the quality can be increased to 0.935 (8.5 percent improvement).,The present research work is limited to project objectives of time, cost and quality. Future expansion of the model will focus on additional project objectives such as safety and sustainability. Furthermore, new optimization models can be developed for construction projects with repetitive nature such as roads, tunnels and high rise buildings.,The present model advances existing research in planning construction projects efficiently and achieving important project objectives. On the practical side, the optimization model will support the construction industry by allowing construction managers to identify the highest quality to deliver a construction project within specified budget and duration, lowest cost for specified duration and quality or shortest duration for specified budget and quality.,The present model introduces new and innovative method of increasing working hours per day and number of working days per shift while analyzing labor working efficiency and overtime rate to identify optimal trade-offs among important project objectives of time, cost and quality.

Time–cost–quality trade-off analysis for planning construction projects

The purpose of this paper is to develop current mathematical models of cost, time, and quality tradeoffs in conditions that parameters of project activities are estimated uncertainly by grey numbers. In some projects like construction projects, activities can be done within a much shorter time by increasing in the resources, while project's cost may rise at the same time. In such situations, managers are usually required to determine the best combination of cost, time, and quality parameters of the activities, although their information regarding these parameters is limited and rather incomplete. The greyness of these parameters in the proposed method can aid managers to deal with these conditions. The most important aspect of the proposed model is that it considers uncertainty of the project planning data in the form of grey numbers. A combination of fuzzy goal programming and grey linear programming is also developed to solve the proposed model. Finally, this model will provide the managers with a stronger ability to face with uncertainty in project management and planning. The application of this model is examined in a numerical example. As its major finding, the model determines an optimal range in which the project managers can respond to intrinsic changes that may occur in the parameters during a project.

A hybrid model of fuzzy goal programming and grey numbers in continuous project time, cost, and quality tradeoff

Comprehensive trade-off control on construction time, cost and quality is main aspect of construction project management, and it is significant for improving the benefits of construction projects. This paper presents mathematical models for time, cost and quality separately, and a multi-objective optimization model for time-cost-quality trade-off optimization is set up by synthesizing weighted single-objective models. In a case study, comparing to standard particle swarm optimization (SPSO) and differential evolution algorithm (DE), the most satisfied decision results can be obtained by applying the hierarchical subpopulation particle swarm optimization algorithm (HSPSO) proposed in this paper to solve time-cost-quality trade-off problems. Finally, exhaustive enumeration is given to verify the effectiveness of the models and the feasibility of solution method.

Multi-Objective Optimization in Construction Project Based on a Hierarchical Subpopulation Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

How to balance time, cost and quality is crucial to construction project management. Tradeoff optimization among them is significant for the improvement of the overall benefits of construction projects. Based on inter-related linear programming functions, a model of multi-attribute utility function is established to study the tradeoff among time, cost and quality. Critical path method (CPM) and ant colony algorithm based on modified selection strategy and global pheromone are applied to obtain the optimal decision result. At last, a case study on heavy repair of instrument control system for hot blast stove is given to verify the feasibility and practicability of the model.

Time control, cost control and quality control are main aspects in construction project management. Taking time, cost and quality into account simultaneously, and keeping the balance among them during the whole process of project management are significant for the improvement of the overall benefits of construction projects. This paper presents the time_cost_quality tradeoff optimization model using multi_attribute utility function theory. Applying network planning techniques and genetic algorithms, the most satisfied decision result can be obtained. At the end of this paper, a case study is given to verify the feasibility and practicability of the model.
