This book provides the first analysis and synthesis of the evidence of the earliest inhabitants of Asia before the appearance of modern humans 100,000 years ago. Asia has received far less attention than Africa and Europe in the search for human origins, but is no longer considered of marginal importance. Indeed, a global understanding of human origins cannot be properly understood without a detailed consideration of the largest continent. In this study, Robin Dennell examines a variety of sources, including the archaeological evidence, the fossil hominin record, and the environmental and climatic background from Southwest, Central, South, and Southeast Asia, as well as China. He presents an authoritative and comprehensive framework for investigations of Asia's oldest societies, challenges many long-standing assumptions about its earliest inhabitants, and places Asia centrally in the discussions of human evolution in the past two million years.

▪ Abstract The past decade has seen a dramatic increase in the number of fossil human specimens discovered in China. A better understanding of the tempo and mode of human evolution in Asia during the Pleistocene can be gained as a result. This new evidence has important implications for understanding the course of human evolution not only in Asia but throughout the world. Major issues in human evolutionary studies such as the timing of the initial hominid dispersal event and the factors behind major transitions in the fossil record are addressed in light of these recent finds.

Spelean stalagmite dating using thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) on the basis of U-Th disequilibrium has contributed greatly to paleoclimatology, paleo-environment, paleo-oceanology, archaeology as well as modern volcano-magmatism studies. Results of our studies on stalagmite chronology are also reported in this paper.

Progress in spelean stalagmite paleoclimatology and chronology

This paper presents a study of the major and trace element compositions of fresh mantle-derived spinel lherzolite and harzburgite inclusions from Cenozoic alkaline basalt in Mount Lianshan and Mount Panshi, Liuhe County, Jiangsu Province. An estimation is made of the contents of the major elements and some of the trace elements in the primitive mantle source region of the area, from which the authors have obtained MgO/Al2O3= 7.86. The contents of MgO and Al2O3 are also obtained as 37.58% and 4.78% respectively based on the correlation of MgO-Al2O3. Then, the contents of various elements in the primitive mantle are calculated using their regression equations with MgO, and the compositon of the primitive mantle, a basic issue in geochemistry study, is discussed on that basis.

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) dating is a relatively new technique applicable also to the dating of materials from littoral zones and shallow sea regions, such as shells, corals, bones and teeth, foraminifera, diatoms, etc. ESR dating can span the time interval between the older limit of14C dating and the younger limit of the K−Ar dating, an interval of 103–106 years. Therefore, ESR technique is very suitatie for the measurement of the age of Quaternary sea—level changes. This paper gives some samples’ results by ESR dating from Early Pleistoncene to Holocene.
