Advanced Nanoarchitectures for Solar Photocatalytic Applications

A surface science perspective on TiO2 photocatalysis

Titania is one of the most widely used benchmark standard photocatalysts in the field of environmental applications. However, the large band gap of titania and massive recombination of photogenerated charge carriers limit its overall photocatalytic efficiency. The former can be overcome by modifying the electronic band structure of titania including various strategies like coupling with a narrow band gap semiconductor, metal ion/nonmetal ion doping, codoping with two or more foreign ions, surface sensitization by organic dyes or metal complexes, and noble metal deposition. The latter can be corrected by changing the surface properties of titania by fluorination or sulfation or by the addition of suitable electron acceptors besides molecular oxygen in the reaction medium. Review on Modified TiO2 Photocatalysis under UV/Visible Light: Selected Results and Related Mechanisms on Interfacial Charge Carrier Transfer Dynamics

The current status of the use of nanoparticles for photothermal treatments is reviewed in detail. The different families of heating nanoparticles are described paying special attention to the physical mechanisms at the root of the light-to-heat conversion processes. The heating efficiencies and spectral working ranges are listed and compared. The most important results obtained in both in vivo and in vitro nanoparticle assisted photothermal treatments are summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of the different heating nanoparticles are discussed.

Nanoparticles for photothermal therapies.

A novel class of visible-light-activated TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by direct hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate through iodine-doping. When calcination temperature is at 673 K, these nanoparticles (mean diameter of ∼5 nm) show stronger absorption in the 400−550 nm range with a red shift in the band gap transition and significantly higher photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 prepared by the same procedure and Degussa P-25 titania nanoparticles in aqueous phenol solution under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). Furthermore, I-doped TiO2 (673 K) still showed pronounced photocatalytic activity under UV and visible light irradiation.

Visible-Light-Activated Nanoparticle Photocatalyst of Iodine-Doped Titanium Dioxide

In this study, the nitrogen-doped TiO2 polycrystalline powders were synthesized by calcination of the hydrolysis product of tetra-butyl titanate with ammonia. According to the XRD, SEM, XPS, UV–vis absorption and BET analysis, we found that the N-doped TiO2 has mesoporous structures and the nitrogen doping causes the absorption edge of TiO2 to shift to a lower energy region. It is considered that nitrogen atoms in doped TiO2 polycrystalline powder are responsible for the significant enhancement in the doped TiO2 photoactivity under visible light irradiation. We explored the photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO2 under various irradiation conditions. We found the photocatalytic activity of the N-doped TiO2 with anatase phases was higher than that of the commercial TiO2 photocatalyst Degussa P25 for phenol decomposition under visible light irradiation, while Degussa P25 showed higher photocatalytic activity under sunlight irradiation. The FT-IR spectra showed that products of phenol decomposition adsorbed on the catalyst surface after photodegradation of phenol.

Preparation method of photocatulyzed active bromine adulerated titanium dioxide nano-material

The nitrogen and fluorine co-doped TiO2 polycrystalline powder was synthesized by calcinations of the hydrolysis product of tetrabutyl titanate with ammonium fluoride. Nitrogen and fluorine co-doping causes the absorption edge of TiO2 to shift to a lower energy region. The photocatalytic activity of co-doped TiO2 with anatase phases was found to be 2.4 times higher than that of the commercial TiO2 photocatalyst Degussa P25 for phenol decomposition under visible light irradiation. The co-doped TiO2 powders only contain anatase phases even at 1000 degrees C. Apparently, ammonium fluoride added retarded phase transformation of the TiO2 powders from anatase to rutile. The substitutional fluorine and interstitial nitrogen atoms in co-doped TiO2 polycrystalline powder were responsible for the vis light response and caused the absorption edge of TiO2 to shift to a lower energy region.
