Since the publication ofRadiochemistry of Germanium (NAS-NS-3043) in 1961, there have been significant developments on the subject. During the period from 1970 to 1980, the diagnostic utilization of the68Ge→68Ga generator system in nuclear medicine stimulated research in the field. In addition, over the past 30 years there have been many advances in the analytical chemistry of germanium (Ge), owing to the rapid increase in application of Ge in the electronics industry and, most recently, as an important component in infrared spectrometers.

A review of the development of the synthetic inorganic ion exchangers during the 1970–1976 period has been made. Synthesis, properties, and analytical applications of the hydrated oxides, acidic salts of multivalent metals, heteropolyacid salts, and synthetic zeolite-type materials that are used as ion-exchangers have been included in the survey. Papers impregnated with titanic tungstate have been used to chromatograph 52 cations in 45 aqueous and mixed solvents. Experimentally, a large number of complex cation separations have been achieved easily and rapidly—Au3+, Tl3+, Ag+, Mo6+, K+, Rb+, CS+, Ni2+, Sb2+, Bi3+, Be2+, and Tl+ can be easily separated from numerous metal ions. Several quaternary, ternary, and binary separations have also been achieved, and some important separations are discussed.

Separation of Metal Ions on Titanium(IV) Tungstate Papers

A new monofunctional amorphous cation exchanger, thorium molybdate, has been systhesised under a range of conditions. The ion-exchange properties of the various products have been studied, and the Th : Mo ratios determined. The fairly stable product with Th : Mo ratio 1 : 2 has been used successfully for the quantitative separations of Fe3+ from Cu2+, Zn2+, and Co2+.
