In thermodynamic terms, ecosystems are machines supplied with energy from an external source, usually the sun. When the input of energy to an ecosystem is exactly equal to its total output of energy, the state of equilibrium which exists is a special case of the First Law of Thermodynamics. The Second Law is relevant too. It implies that in every spontaneous process, physical or chemical, the production of 'useful' energy, which could be harnessed in a form such as mechanical work, must be accompanied by a simultaneous 'waste' of heat. No biological system can break or evade this law. The heat produced by a respiring cell is an inescapable component of cellular metabolism, the cost which Nature has to pay for creating biological order out of physical chaos in the environment of plants and animals. Dividing the useful energy of a thermodynamic process by the total energy involved gives a figure for the efficiency of the process, and this procedure has been widely used to analyse the flow of energy in ecosystems. For example, the efficiency with which a stand of plants produces dry matter by photosynthesis can be defined as the ratio of chemical energy stored in the assimilates to radiant energy absorbed by foliage during the period of assimilation. The choice of absorbed energy as a base for calculating efficiency is convenient but arbitrary. To derive an efficiency depending on the environment of a particular site as well as oil the nature of the vegetation, dry matter production can be related to the receipt of solar energy at the top of the earth's atmosphere. This exercise was attempted by Professor William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, in 1852. 'The author estimates the mechanical value of the solar heat which, were none of it absorbed by the atmosphere, would fall annually on each square foot of land, at 530 000 000 foot pounds; and infers that probably a good deal more, 1/1000 of the solar heat, which actually falls on growing plants, is converted into mechanical effect.' Outside the earth's atmosphere, a surface kept at right angles to the sun's rays receives energy at a mean rate of 1360 W m-2 or 1f36 kJ m-2 s-1, a figure known as the solar constant. As the energy stored by plants is about 17 kJ per gram of dry matter, the solar constant is equivalent to the production of dry matter at a rate of about 1 g m-2 every 12 s, 7 kg m-2 per day, or 2 6 t m-2 year-'. The annual yield of agricultural crops ranges from a maximum of 30-60 t ha-' in field experiments to less than I t ha-' in some forms of subsistence farming. When these rates are expressed as a fraction of the integrated solar constant, the efficiencies of agricultural systems lie between 0-2 and 0 004%, a range including Kelvin's estimate of 0-1%. Solar radiation and productivity in tropical ecosystems

Recent research has pointed to a number of inherent disadvantages of unrotated principal components and empirical orthogonal functions when these techniques are used to depict individual modes of variation of data matrices in exploratory analyses. The various pitfalls are outlined and illustrated with an alternative method introduced to minimize these problems via available linear transformations known as simple structure rotations. The rationale and theory behind simple structure rotation and Procrustes target rotation is examined in the context of meteorological/climatological applications. This includes a discussion of the six unique ways to decompose a rotated data set in order to maximize the physical interpretability of the rotated results.



The various analytic simple structure rotations available are compared by a Monte Carlo simulation, which is a modification of a similar technique developed by Tucker (1983), revealing that the DAPPFR and Promax k = 2 rotations are the most accurate in recovering the input structure of the modes of variation over a wide range of conditions. Additionally, these results allow the investigator the opportunity to check the accuracy of the unrotated or rotated solution for specific types of data. This is important because, in the past, the decision of whether or not to apply a specific rotation has been a ‘blind decision’. In response to this, a methodology is presented herein by which the researcher can assess the degree of simple structure embedded within any meteorological data set and then apply known information about the data to the Monte Carlo results to optimize the likelihood of achieving physically meaningful results from a principal component analysis.

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews that the Late Wisconsinan North American ice sheet complex consisted of three major ice sheets: (1) the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which was centred on the Canadian Shield, but also expanded across the Interior Plains to the west and south, (2) the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, which inundated the western mountain belt between the northernmost co-terminus United States and Beringia, and (3) the Innuitian Ice Sheet, which covered most of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago north of about 7°N latitude. The ice cover over Newfoundland and the Maritime Provinces of Canada is usually referred to as the Appalachian Ice Complex, because ice flowed out from local centres rather than from the Canadian Shield. All of the peripheral ice sheets were confluent at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) with the Laurentide Ice Sheet, and the Greenland Ice Sheet was confluent with the Innuitian Ice Sheet. The nucleus of this complex, the Laurentide, comprised three major sectors, the Labrador Sector, the Keewatin Sector, and the Baffin Sector, named for areas of inception mid probable areas of outflow at LGM and located respectively east, west and north of Hudson Bay. The chapter presents revised maps of North American deglaciation at 500-year and finer resolution. These maps represent an updating of a series prepared nearly two decades ago for the INQUA 1987 Congress.

If the global consumption of fossil fuels continues to grow at its present rate, atmospheric CO2 content will double in about 50 years. Climatic models suggest that the resultant greenhouse-warming effect will be greatly magnified in high latitudes. The computed temperature rise at lat 80° S could start rapid deglaciation of West Antarctica, leading to a 5 m rise in sea level.

Values for the precession and obliquity of the earth 9000 years ago indicate that the global average solar radiation for July 9000 years ago was 7 percent greater than at present. When the estimated solar radiation values are used in a low-resulation climate model, the model simulates an intensified continent-scale monsoon circulation. This result agrees with paleoclimatic evidence from Africa, Arabia, and India that monsoon rains were stronger between 10,000 and 5000 years ago than they are today.

Dating climatic episodes of the Holocene

A relationship is identified between the area of the North Atlantic with surface temperatures greater than 26.8°C and the frequency of tropical storms and hurricanes. The relationship is direct and near-exponential. When the mean monthly area with sea temperature of 26.8°C is less than about 8.5 × 106 km2, tropical storms and hurricanes do not occur. Estimates of tropical storm frequency based on the above relationship are made for several episodes of the Holocene.

Near-surface airstream source regions of the Northern Hemisphere have been identified using 16-year mean resultant winds from 3° latitude by 3° longitude grids. Tracing the airstreams back to their divergent centers reveals 19 different sources during various seasons of the year. Five of these sources(air originating over the North and South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and air over Turkey) are resident in the Northern Hemisphere 12 months of the year. Another three (central Asian, Arctic and central East Asian air) exist for at least 11 months per year. The remaining 11 source regions are present from 1–9 months per year and their area of influence is much less than that of the 5 year-long sources.
