The reduction of nitro compounds to the corresponding amines is one of the most utilized catalytic processes in the fine and bulk chemical industry. The latest development of catalysts with cheap metals like Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu has led to their tremendous achievements over the last years prompting their greater application as “standard” catalysts. In this review, we will comprehensively discuss the use of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts based on non-noble 3d-metals for the reduction of nitro compounds using various reductants. The different systems will be revised considering both the catalytic performances and synthetic aspects highlighting also their advantages and disadvantages.

Palladium nanoparticles stabilized by polyethylene glycol: Efficient, recyclable catalyst for hydrogenation of styrene and nitrobenzene

CO2/H2 was successfully employed in alkylation reactions by performing CO2 reduction and amine N-methylation in one-pot. In the presence of a simple CuAlOx catalyst, N-methyl or N,N-dimethyl amines with different structures can be selectively synthesized with up to 96% yields by applying amine, nitrobenzene and nitrile as starting materials.

Methylation of amines, nitrobenzenes and aromatic nitriles with carbon dioxide and molecular hydrogen

Nanosized silica gel supported Ni catalysts that have average Ni particle size of 3.7, 11.4, and 11.8 nm were prepared by facile impregnation of different Ni precursors and used for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB). These catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that Ni dispersed highly on the surface of silica gel in the catalyst prepared via Ni(en)3(NO3)2, and the detected average Ni particle size was 3.7 nm. On the 3.7 nm sized Ni catalyst, the selectivity of aniline (AN) reached 99% with a 100% conversion of NB in 5.5 h at 90 °C, 1.0 MPa, and NB:Ni = 305 (mole ratio). But, the activities of 11.8 nm sized Ni catalysts and commercial Raney Ni catalyst are quite lower. The reaction network and mechanism of NB hydrogenation on 3.7 nm sized Ni catalyst were discussed on the basis of products distributions at different temperatures and pressures.
