Since the discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene in 2004, research on ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has grown exponentially in the fields of condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Highlighting their compelling physical, chemical, electronic, and optical properties, as well as their various potential applications, in this Review, we summarize the state-of-art progress on the ultrathin 2D nanomaterials with a particular emphasis on their recent advances. First, we introduce the unique advances on ultrathin 2D nanomaterials, followed by the description of their composition and crystal structures. The assortments of their synthetic methods are then summarized, including insights on their advantages and limitations, alongside some recommendations on suitable characterization techniques. Recent Advances in Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials

Heteroatom doped carbon materials represent one of the most prominent families of materials that are used in energy related applications, such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen storage or supercapacitors. While doping carbons with nitrogen atoms has experienced great progress throughout the past decades and yielded promising material concepts, also other doping candidates have gained the researchers' interest in the last few years. Boron is already relatively widely studied, and as its electronic situation is contrary to the one of nitrogen, codoping carbons with both heteroatoms can probably create synergistic effects. Sulphur and phosphorus have just recently entered the world of carbon synthesis, but already the first studies published prove their potential, especially as electrocatalysts in the cathodic compartment of fuel cells. Due to their size and their electronegativity being lower than those of carbon, structural distortions and changes of the charge densities are induced in the carbon materials. This article is to give a state of the art update on the most recent developments concerning the advanced heteroatom doping of carbon that goes beyond nitrogen. Doped carbon materials and their applications in energy devices are discussed with respect to their boron-, sulphur- and phosphorus-doping.

Doping carbons beyond nitrogen: an overview of advanced heteroatom doped carbons with boron, sulphur and phosphorus for energy applications

Heteroatom doping can endow graphene with various new or improved electromagnetic, physicochemical, optical, and structural properties. This greatly extends the arsenal of graphene materials and their potential for a spectrum of applications. Considering the latest developments, we comprehensively and critically discuss the syntheses, properties and emerging applications of the growing family of heteroatom-doped graphene materials. The advantages, disadvantages, and preferential doping features of current synthesis approaches are compared, aiming to provide clues for developing new and controllable synthetic routes. We emphasize the distinct properties resulting from various dopants, different doping levels and configurations, and synergistic effects from co-dopants, hoping to assist a better understanding of doped graphene materials. The mechanisms underlying their advantageous uses for energy storage, energy conversion, sensing, and gas storage are highlighted, aiming to stimulate more competent applications.

Graphene-supported nanoelectrocatalysts for fuel cells: synthesis, properties, and applications.

To replace precious platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), edge-selectively sulfurized graphene nanoplatelets (SGnP) are synthesized as efficient metal-free electrocatalysts simply by ball-milling pristine graphite in the presence of sulfur (S8 ). The resultant SGnPs exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward ORR with better tolerance to methanol crossover/CO poisoning effects and longer-term stability than those of pristine graphite and commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts. Edge-selectively sulfurized graphene nanoplatelets as efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction: the electron spin effect.

Doping is a common and effective approach to tailor semiconductor properties. Here, we demonstrate the growth of large-area sulfur (S)-doped graphene sheets on copper substrate via the chemical vapor deposition technique by using liquid organics (hexane in the presence of S) as the precursor. We found that S could be doped into graphene's lattice and mainly formed linear nanodomains, which was proved by elemental analysis, high resolution transmission microscopy and Raman spectra. Measurements on S-doped graphene field-effect transistors (G-FETs) revealed that S-doped graphene exhibited lower conductivity and distinctive p-type semiconductor properties compared with those of pristine graphene. Our approach has produced a new member in the family of graphene based materials and is promising for producing graphene based devices for multiple applications.

Synthesis of S-doped graphene by liquid precursor

A series of bottom-emitting Blue OLEDs with an optimal efficiency and lifetime are successfully fabricated by introducing different electrical material combinations. Distinct EQE-Current density performance are analyzed and validated by the transient EL response, which reveal the Triplet-Triplet Annihilation (TTA) impact differently. Overall, an efficiency-lifetime-trade-off have been obtained, with 60% Lifetime promotion, 3% EQE decline and 6% voltage rise. The investigation of mechanism and experimental validation provide a method in long-lifetime and high-efficiency device design.
