Battery Lifetime Prognostics

In this paper, damage pre-cursors based residual life computation approach for various package elements to prognosticate electronic systems prior to appearance of any macro-indicators of damage has been presented. In order to implement the system-health monitoring system, precursor variables or leading indicators-of-failure have been identified for various package elements and failure mechanisms. Model-algorithms have been developed to correlate precursors with impending failure for computation of residual life. Package elements investigated include, first-level interconnects, dielectrics, chip interconnects, underfills and semiconductors. Examples of damage proxies include, phase growth rate of solder interconnects, intermetallics, normal stress at chip interface, and interfacial shear stress

Prognostics and Health Management of Electronics

Reliability engineering dates back to reliability studies in the 20th century; since then, various models have been defined and used. Software engineering plays a key role from several viewpoints, but the main concern is that we're moving toward a more connected world, including enterprises and mobile devices. The three articles in this special issue illustrate current trends in this domain.

Degradation mechanisms of proton exchange membrane fuel cell under typical automotive operating conditions

Fuel cell technology can be traced back to 1839 when British scientist Sir William Grove discovered that it was possible to generate electricity by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen gases. However, fuel cell still cannot compete with internal combustion engines although they have many advantages including zero carbon emissions. Fossil fuels are cheaper and present very high volumetric energy densities compared with the hydrogen gas. Furthermore, hydrogen storage as a liquid is still a huge challenge. Another important disadvantage is the lifespan of the fuel cell because of their durability, reliability and maintainability. Prognostics is an emerging technology in sustainability of engineering systems through failure prevention, reliability assessment and remaining useful lifetime estimation. Prognostics and health monitoring can play a critical role in enhancing the durability, reliability and maintainability of the fuel cell system. This paper presents a review on the current state-of-the-art in prognostics and health monitoring of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), aiming at identifying research and development opportunities in these fields. This paper also highlights the importance of incorporating prognostics and failure modes, mechanisms and effects analysis (FMMEA) in PEMFC to give them sustainable competitive advantage when compared with other non-clean energy solutions.

A hybrid energy efficient building ventilation system

Experimental study of an energy efficient hybrid system for surface drying

This paper is aimed to develop a high performance rotary heat exchanger (RHE) cooling/heating ventilation system using reverse cycle heat pump (RCHP). The coefficient of performance (COP) of the reverse cycle heat pump, the energy consumption of the heating/ cooling process and suitable climatic conditioning for reverse cycle heat pump cases, which operate better with low-energy are estimated. Waste energy from the exhaust air stream is used to precondition the outdoor before it is supplied into the building. Thus the proposed system provides free heating in the winter and free cooling in the summer compared to conventional systems. Its performance is better than the typical reheat or air-conditioning system to provide the same indoor air quality (IAQ) levels. Also it is shown that the energy saving up to 60% (heat energy) is achieved by using the proposed hybrid system in building ventilation applications.
