A fast-Fourier-transform method of topography and interferometry is proposed. By computer processing of a noncontour type of fringe pattern, automatic discrimination is achieved between elevation and depression of the object or wave-front form, which has not been possible by the fringe-contour-generation techniques. The method has advantages over moire topography and conventional fringe-contour interferometry in both accuracy and sensitivity. Unlike fringe-scanning techniques, the method is easy to apply because it uses no moving components.

Innumerable applications can be visualized, for instance, in medical, security, entertainment, and tactical scenarios. Despite human activity recognition (HAR) being an active field for more than a decade, there are still key aspects that, if addressed, would constitute a significant turn in the way people interact with mobile devices. This paper surveys the state of the art in HAR based on wearable sensors. A general architecture is first presented along with a description of the main components of any HAR system. We also propose a two-level taxonomy in accordance to the learning approach (either supervised or semi-supervised) and the response time (either offline or online). Then, the principal issues and challenges are discussed, as well as the main solutions to each one of them. Twenty eight systems are qualitatively evaluated in terms of recognition performance, energy consumption, obtrusiveness, and flexibility, among others. Finally, we present some open problems and ideas that, due to their high relevance, should be addressed in future research.

A Survey on Human Activity Recognition using Wearable Sensors

Flat optical devices thinner than a wavelength promise to replace conventional free-space components for wavefront and polarization control. Transmissive flat lenses are particularly interesting for applications in imaging and on-chip optoelectronic integration. Several designs based on plasmonic metasurfaces, high-contrast transmitarrays and gratings have been recently implemented but have not provided a performance comparable to conventional curved lenses. Here we report polarization-insensitive, micron-thick, high-contrast transmitarray micro-lenses with focal spots as small as 0.57 λ. The measured focusing efficiency is up to 82%. A rigorous method for ultrathin lens design, and the trade-off between high efficiency and small spot size (or large numerical aperture) are discussed. The micro-lenses, composed of silicon nano-posts on glass, are fabricated in one lithographic step that could be performed with high-throughput photo or nanoimprint lithography, thus enabling widespread adoption.

Subwavelength-thick Lenses with High Numerical Apertures and Large Efficiency Based on High Contrast Transmitarrays

Zero-order gratings are grating structures with a period that is small compared with the wavelength of light. Only the directly transmitted or reflected light, the zero diffraction order, is nonevanescent and propagates in a distance from the grating. Thus the grating behaves like a slab of ordinary homogeneous material with an effective refractive index. By varying the material composition, i.e., by variation of the duty cycle of the grating, the effective refractive index can be changed. A grating with variable duty cycle therefore behaves like a material with distributed index. Based on such artificial materials, distributed-index elements are proposed. The physical principle is demonstrated with water waves.

By means of pattern recognition methods, it is possible to identify with certain accuracy which movement is being performed. This work presents a comparison of different methods for recognition of daily-life activities, which will serve as basis for the development of an online activity monitoring system.

Context-aware mobile health monitoring: Evaluation of different pattern recognition methods for classification of physical activity

PURPOSE. To determine in vitro image qualities of artificial eyes achieved with spherical, aberration-free, average spherical aberration-correcting, and customized spherical aberration-correcting IOLs in centered, decentered, and tilted positions. METHODS. The in vitro performance of these IOL models was determined by optical bench measurements. The experimental setup included a laser light source controlled by aperture stops that corresponded to 3- and 5-mm pupil apertures, an artificial eye with three alternative corneal models exhibiting low, intermediate, and high spherical aberration (SA), lOLs mounted to an immersed IOL holder that could be moved laterally and tilted, and a charge-coupled device camera and software to determine three-dimensional point spread function (PSF), modulation transfer function, and Strehl ratio. RESULTS. Differences among the various lens models turned out to be low for a 3-mm pupil. For a pupil aperture of 5 mm, customized IOLs showed the best results for perfect lens positioning. With ongoing decentration and tilt, customized IOLs rapidly lost their advantages, particularly in corneas with high SA and IOLs of high diopters. Spherical IOLs were always inferior to aberration-free IOLs. CONCLUSIONS. Reasonably well-centered aberration-correcting IOLs may provide considerably better image quality than conventional spherical IOLs. In the presence of significant postoperative decentration and tilt of the IOL, aberration-free IOLs are the safest option among the various intraocular lens designs.

In Vitro Strehl Ratios with Spherical, Aberration-Free, Average, and Customized Spherical Aberration-Correcting Intraocular Lenses

Lidar sensors are often used in mobile robots and autonomous vehicles to complement camera, radar and ultrasonic sensors for environment perception. Typically, perception algorithms are trained to only detect moving and static objects as well as ground estimation, but intentionally ignore weather effects to reduce false detections. In this work, we present an in-depth analysis of automotive lidar performance under harsh weather conditions, i.e. heavy rain and dense fog. An extensive data set has been recorded for various fog and rain conditions, which is the basis for the conducted in-depth analysis of the point cloud under changing environmental conditions. In addition, we introduce a novel approach to detect and classify rain or fog with lidar sensors only and achieve an mean union over intersection of 97.14% for a data set in controlled environments. The analysis of weather influences on the performance of lidar sensors and the weather detection are important steps towards improving safety levels for autonomous driving in adverse weather conditions by providing reliable information to adapt vehicle behavior.
