Journal ArticleDOI
Association between Culturable Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) in Semen and HIV-1 RNA Levels in Semen and Blood: Evidence for Compartmentalization of HIV-1 between Semen and Blood
Robert W. Coombs,Carl E. Speck,James P. Hughes,Willa Lee,Reigran Sampoleo,Susan O. Ross,Joan Dragavon,Greg Peterson,Thomas M. Hooton,Ann C. Collier,Lawrence Corey,Laura A. Koutsky,John N. Krieger +12 more
TL;DR: Both qualitative and quantitative virologic measurements were compared between blood and genital compartments for 128 men infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 to address several controversial issues concerning HIV-1 shedding in semen and to obtain further information about the distribution of virus between these two compartments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors for HIV-1 shedding in semen.
Carl Speck,Robert W. Coombs,Laura A. Koutsky,Judith Zeh,Susan O. Ross,Thomas M. Hooton,Ann C. Collier,Lawrence Corey,Anne Cent,Joan Dragavon,Willa Lee,Eric Johnson,Reigran Sampoleo,John N. Krieger +13 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that measures of systemic virus burden alone may not predict semen infectivity reliably and both systemic and local genitourinary tract factors influence the risk of semen HIV-1 shedding.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitation of Hepatitis C Viral RNA in Sera of Hemodialysis Patients: Gender-Related Differences in Viral Load
Dwight B. DuBois,David R. Gretch,Corazon dela Rosa,Willa Lee,James Fine,Christopher R. Blagg,Lawrence Corey +6 more
TL;DR: Intravenous drug abuse was the most frequently identified risk factor for infection with HCV in this population of hemodialysis patients and no association between HCV RNA levels and hepatic enzyme levels was apparent.
