Review of Particle Physics

This paper presents cosmological results based on full-mission Planck observations of temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Our results are in very good agreement with the 2013 analysis of the Planck nominal-mission temperature data, but with increased precision. The temperature and polarization power spectra are consistent with the standard spatially-flat 6-parameter ΛCDM cosmology with a power-law spectrum of adiabatic scalar perturbations (denoted “base ΛCDM” in this paper). From the Planck temperature data combined with Planck lensing, for this cosmology we find a Hubble constant, H0 = (67.8 ± 0.9) km s-1Mpc-1, a matter density parameter Ωm = 0.308 ± 0.012, and a tilted scalar spectral index with ns = 0.968 ± 0.006, consistent with the 2013 analysis. Note that in this abstract we quote 68% confidence limits on measured parameters and 95% upper limits on other parameters. We present the first results of polarization measurements with the Low Frequency Instrument at large angular scales. Combined with the Planck temperature and lensing data, these measurements give a reionization optical depth of τ = 0.066 ± 0.016, corresponding to a reionization redshift of . These results are consistent with those from WMAP polarization measurements cleaned for dust emission using 353-GHz polarization maps from the High Frequency Instrument. We find no evidence for any departure from base ΛCDM in the neutrino sector of the theory; for example, combining Planck observations with other astrophysical data we find Neff = 3.15 ± 0.23 for the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom, consistent with the value Neff = 3.046 of the Standard Model of particle physics. The sum of neutrino masses is constrained to ∑ mν < 0.23 eV. The spatial curvature of our Universe is found to be very close to zero, with | ΩK | < 0.005. Adding a tensor component as a single-parameter extension to base ΛCDM we find an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r0.002< 0.11, consistent with the Planck 2013 results and consistent with the B-mode polarization constraints from a joint analysis of BICEP2, Keck Array, and Planck (BKP) data. Adding the BKP B-mode data to our analysis leads to a tighter constraint of r0.002 < 0.09 and disfavours inflationarymodels with a V(φ) ∝ φ2 potential. The addition of Planck polarization data leads to strong constraints on deviations from a purely adiabatic spectrum of fluctuations. We find no evidence for any contribution from isocurvature perturbations or from cosmic defects. Combining Planck data with other astrophysical data, including Type Ia supernovae, the equation of state of dark energy is constrained to w = −1.006 ± 0.045, consistent with the expected value for a cosmological constant. The standard big bang nucleosynthesis predictions for the helium and deuterium abundances for the best-fit Planck base ΛCDM cosmology are in excellent agreement with observations. We also constraints on annihilating dark matter and on possible deviations from the standard recombination history. In neither case do we find no evidence for new physics. The Planck results for base ΛCDM are in good agreement with baryon acoustic oscillation data and with the JLA sample of Type Ia supernovae. However, as in the 2013 analysis, the amplitude of the fluctuation spectrum is found to be higher than inferred from some analyses of rich cluster counts and weak gravitational lensing. We show that these tensions cannot easily be resolved with simple modifications of the base ΛCDM cosmology. Apart from these tensions, the base ΛCDM cosmology provides an excellent description of the Planck CMB observations and many other astrophysical data sets.

From the Planck temperature and lensing data, for this cosmology we find a Hubble constant, H0= (67.8 +/- 0.9) km/s/Mpc, a matter density parameter Omega_m = 0.308 +/- 0.012 and a scalar spectral index with n_s = 0.968 +/- 0.006. Planck 2015 results. XIII. Cosmological parameters

We present here the final results of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Key Project to measure the Hubble constant. We summarize our method, the results, and the uncertainties, tabulate our revised distances, and give the implications of these results for cosmology. Our results are based on a Cepheid calibration of several secondary distance methods applied over the range of about 60-400 Mpc. The analysis presented here benefits from a number of recent improvements and refinements, including (1) a larger LMC Cepheid sample to define the fiducial period-luminosity (PL) relations, (2) a more recent HST Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) photometric calibration, (3) a correction for Cepheid metallicity, and (4) a correction for incompleteness bias in the observed Cepheid PL samples. We adopt a distance modulus to the LMC (relative to which the more distant galaxies are measured) of μ0 = 18.50 ± 0.10 mag, or 50 kpc. New, revised distances are given for the 18 spiral galaxies for which Cepheids have been discovered as part of the Key Project, as well as for 13 additional galaxies with published Cepheid data. The new calibration results in a Cepheid distance to NGC 4258 in better agreement with the maser distance to this galaxy. Based on these revised Cepheid distances, we find values (in km s-1 Mpc-1) of H0 = 71 ± 2 ± 6 (systematic) (Type Ia supernovae), H0 = 71 ± 3 ± 7 (Tully-Fisher relation), H0 = 70 ± 5 ± 6 (surface brightness fluctuations), H0 = 72 ± 9 ± 7 (Type II supernovae), and H0 = 82 ± 6 ± 9 (fundamental plane). We combine these results for the different methods with three different weighting schemes, and find good agreement and consistency with H0 = 72 ± 8 km s-1 Mpc-1. Finally, we compare these results with other, global methods for measuring H0.

Final Results from the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project to Measure the Hubble Constant

Supermassive black holes (BHs) have been found in 85 galaxies by dynamical modeling of spatially resolved kinematics. The Hubble Space Telescope revolutionized BH research by advancing the subject from its proof-of-concept phase into quantitative studies of BH demographics. Most influential was the discovery of a tight correlation between BH mass and the velocity dispersion σ of the bulge component of the host galaxy. Together with similar correlations with bulge luminosity and mass, this led to the widespread belief that BHs and bulges coevolve by regulating each other's growth. Conclusions based on one set of correlations from in brightest cluster ellipticals to in the smallest galaxies dominated BH work for more than a decade. New results are now replacing this simple story with a richer and more plausible picture in which BHs correlate differently with different galaxy components. Coevolution (Or Not) of Supermassive Black Holes and Host Galaxies

ABSTRACT Soil testing is a tool used to predict crop response to residual soil phosphorus (P). It is commonly perceived that high soil test P indicates high potential for off-site movement and impact on surface water quality. However, P source potentially confounds the relation between soil test P and soil P solubility. This study evaluated how soil test P (Mehlich-1 and Mehlich-3) and total P (TP) related to water-soluble P (WSP) for manure-(n = 120) and fertilizer-amended (n = 120) soils, and soils forming in phosphate-rich parent material (phosphatic soils; n = 60). Results document marked differences in slopes of WSP as a function of soil test P and TP for the three P sources. Manure-amended soils showed the highest regression coefficients (R 2 = 0.89, 0.89 and 0.92) and slopes for WSP but phosphatic soils, in contrast, showed no tendency for increased WSP with increasing soil test P or TP despite having the highest range of TP content. Fertilizer-amended soils had lowest values for all P measures. Manure-applied P accumulated to much higher levels in these sandy soils than P applied as inorganic P suggesting the latter is either quickly recovered by crops or lost. Phosphate minerals in naturally phosphatic soils do not likely constitute the same extractable P pool as for agriculturally amended soils. Hence, soil test extractions may not be well-calibrated for phosphatic soils. Standard soil test P values may not be a reliable indicator of high P leaching loss potential for naturally phosphatic soils, to the extent that WSP is related to leaching risk.

Outer Halo Star Clusters: Comparisons for Cloud Clusters

Purpose: To compare retrobulbar anesthesia injection (RAI) with hyaluronidase and without hyaluronidase in vitreoretinal surgery using clinical efficacy measures and orbital manometry (OM). Methods: This prospective randomized double-masked study enrolled patients who had surgery using an 8 mL RAI with or without hyaluronidase. Outcome measures were clinical block effectiveness (akinesia, pain scores, need for supplemental anesthetic or sedative medications) and orbital dynamics assessed by OM before and up to 5 minutes after RAI. Results: Twenty-two patients received RAI with hyaluronidase (Group H+), and 25 received RAI without hyaluronidase (Group H−). Baseline characteristics were well matched. No differences in clinical efficacy were found. OM showed no difference in preinjection orbital tension (4 ± 2 mm Hg in both groups) or calculated orbital compliance (0.6 ± 0.3 mL/mm Hg, Group H+; 0.5 ± 0.2 mL/mm Hg, Group H−) (P = .13). After RAI, the peak orbital tension was 23 ± 15 mm Hg in Group H+ and 24 ± 9 mm Hg in Group H− (P = .67); it declined more rapidly in Group H+. Orbital tension at 5 minutes was 6 ± 3 mm Hg in Group H+ and 11 ± 5 mm Hg in Group H− (P = .0008). Conclusions: OM showed faster resolution of post-RAI orbital tension elevation with hyaluronidase; however, there were no clinically evident differences between groups. Thus, 8 mL RAI with or without hyaluronidase is safe and can achieve excellent clinical results. Our data do not support the routine use of hyaluronidase with RAI.

Orbital Dynamics and Efficacy of Retrobulbar Anesthesia With and Without Hyaluronidase in Vitreoretinal Surgery

We present the results of combined optical and near-infrared photometry for the globular cluster systems of the giant ellipticals IC 4051 and NGC 3311. We use the reduced age-metallicity degeneracy in (V-I) vs.(V-H) color-color diagrams to derive the cumulative age distribution within the red sub-population of globular clusters and to search for age sub-populations. The age distribution is then compared to the one determined for simulated globular cluster systems in order to set constraints on the relative age and size of these globular cluster sub-populations. In both galaxies we find a significant fraction of globular clusters with ages between 2- 5 Gyr. We also investigate the metallicity distribution in both systems. Small number statistics prevent us from making any definite statements concerning NGC 3311, but we find that the derived metallicity distribution of the IC 4051 clusters strongly depends on the assumed age distribution. Based on our most likely result that finds a large number of young/intermediate age clusters (~2 Gyr) within the selected globular cluster sample, we find metallicity peaks at $\sim$ -0.2 for the old clusters and +0.8 for the young clusters. Only few very metal poor clusters are found. However, the metallicity distribution within the young/intermediate globular cluster population is significantly affected by our choice of the applied Single Stellar Population model. The mean metallicity of the second generation of globular clusters changes from the above mentioned and extremely high +0.8 dex to +0.2 dex. Note that the model dependency becomes less severe with an increasing age of the cluster population.
