Polymer-inorganic particle blends are incorporated into structures generally involving interfaces with additional materials that can be used advantageously for forming desirable devices. In some embodiments, the structures are optical structures, and the interfaces are optical interfaces. The different materials at the interface can have differences in index-of-refraction to yield desired optical properties at the interface. In some embodiments, structures are formed with periodic variations in index-of-refraction. In particular, photonic crystals can be formed. Suitable methods can be used to form the desired structures.

Structures incorporating polymer-inorganic particle blends

PURPOSE:To obtain titled composition of lower heat generation, high reinforcement and durability and effective for increasing rolling resistance when used for materials other than tread, by incorporating a diene rubber component with a carbon black having a specific sophisticated structure. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition comprising (A) 100pts.wt. of a diene rubber component and (B) 30-60 (pref. 40-50)pts.wt. of a carbon black whose characteristics are: (1) nitrogen absorption (N2SA)...35-105 (pref. 35-65)m /g (2) DBP oil absorption ...140-200ml/100g (3) 24M4DBP oil absorption ...60- 120ml/100g and (4) DELTADBP (=DBP oil absorption minus 24M4DBP oil absorption)...50-110 (65-110)ml/100g. Higher proportion of the sophisticated structure due to weak bond (represented by DELTADBP) will lead to an improved carbon black with advantages in terms of both high durability and low heat generation.

Rubber composition for tire

A carbon black with a tint residual below -6 in a rubber composition causes the hysteresis or heat buildup of such a rubber composition to be significantly lower than that of a rubber composition incorporating a carbon black with a higher tint residual, while the abrasion resistance of such rubber compositions incorporating these different blacks remains essentially unchanged. Tint residual is the difference between the measured tint and the tint calculated from the structure, nitrogen surface area, and CTAB surface area in accordance with a specific formula disclosed.

Carbon black for low-hysteresis rubber compositions

Formulations comprising novel porous metal oxide particles and binder are particularly suitable for ink receptive coatings, e.g., for ink jet papers and films. The metal oxide particles used in this application have a porous structure that differs significantly from the nonporous silica colloids. The particles have a median particle size in the range of about 0.05 to about 3 microns and porosity such that when an aqueous dispersion of the particles is dried at least 0.5 cc/g of pore volume is from pores having a pore size of 600 Å or less. The particles also have a viscosity derived pore volume of at least 0.5 cc/g.

Formulation suitable for ink receptive coatings

New classes of carbon blacks which may be broadly characterized as having an Iodine adsorption number (I2No.) of 50-112 milligrams/gram (mg/g) and a primary particle size measured in accordance with the procedures in ASTM Test Procedure D3849-89 (hereinafter denoted as 'primary particle size') of less than or equal to 25 nanometers (nm). Certain of the carbon blacks of the present invention may be further characterized as having a CDBP (dibutyl absorption value of the crushed carbon black) of less than or equal to 102 cubic centimeters DBP per 100 grams of carbon black (cc/100g). The present invention provides carbon blacks having I2No. of 65-95 mg/g and a primary particle size of less than or equal to 20 nm. Also disclosed and claimed are carbon blacks having an I2No. of 100-112 mg/g and a primary particle size of less than or equal to 20 nm. The present invention further provides carbon blacks having an I2No. of 65-112 mg/g; a primary particle size of less than or equal to 20 nanometers (nm); and a CDBP (dibutyl absorption value of the crushed carbon black) of less than or equal to 102 cubic centimeters DBP per 100 grams of carbon black (cc/100g). In addition, carbon blacks having an I2No. of 50-70 milligrams/gram (mg/g) and a primary particle size of less than or equal to 25 nm, are disclosed and claimed. The present invention also provides carbon blacks having an I2No. of 50-85 mg/g; a primary particle size of less than or equal to 25 nm; and a CDBP of less than or equal to 96 cc/100g. The carbon blacks are particularly well suited for use in the production of polymer compositions. Also described and claimed are polymer compositions incorporating the new carbon blacks.
