Journal ArticleDOI
Defining community acquired pneumonia severity on presentation to hospital: an international derivation and validation study
Wei Shen Lim,M M van der Eerden,Richard Laing,Wim Boersma,Noel Karalus,G. I. Town,Sarah Lewis,J T Macfarlane +7 more
TL;DR: A simple six point score based on confusion, urea, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and age can be used to stratify patients with CAP into different management groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Azithromycin Maintenance Treatment on Infectious Exacerbations Among Patients With Non–Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis: The BAT Randomized Controlled Trial
Josje Altenburg,Casper S. de Graaff,Ymkje Stienstra,Jacobus H. Sloos,Eric H. J. van Haren,Ralph J. H. Koppers,Tjip S. van der Werf,Wim Boersma +7 more
TL;DR: Among adults with non-CF bronchiectasis, the daily use of azithromycin for 12 months compared with placebo resulted in a lower rate of infectious exacerbations, which could result in better quality of life and might influence survival, although effects on antibiotic resistance need to be considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antibiotic Treatment Strategies for Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Adults
Douwe F. Postma,Cornelis H. van Werkhoven,Leontine J. R. van Elden,Steven F. T. Thijsen,Andy I. M. Hoepelman,Jan Kluytmans,Wim Boersma,Clara J. Compaijen,Eva van der Wall,Jan M. Prins,Jan Jelrik Oosterheert,Marc J. M. Bonten +11 more
TL;DR: Among patients with clinically suspected CAP admitted to non-ICU wards, a strategy of preferred empirical treatment with beta-lactam monotherapy was noninferior to strategies with a beta- lactam-macrolide combination or fluoroquinolone monotherapy with regard to 90-day mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of corticosteroids in community-acquired pneumonia: a randomized double-blinded clinical trial.
TL;DR: Because of its association with increased late failure and lack of efficacy prednisolone should not be recommended as routine adjunctive treatment in CAP, and a benefit in more severely ill patients cannot be excluded.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulmonary exacerbation in adults with bronchiectasis: a consensus definition for clinical research
Adam T. Hill,Charles S. Haworth,Stefano Aliberti,Alan F. Barker,Francesco Blasi,Wim Boersma,James D. Chalmers,Anthony De Soyza,Katerina Dimakou,J. Stuart Elborn,Charles Feldman,Patrick A. Flume,Pieter Goeminne,Michael R. Loebinger,Rosario Menéndez,Lucy Morgan,Marlene Murris,Eva Polverino,Alexandra L. Quittner,Felix C. Ringshausen,Gregory Tino,Antoni Torres,Montserrat Vendrell,Tobias Welte,Robert Wilson,Conroy Wong,Anne E. O'Donnell,Timothy R. Aksamit +27 more
TL;DR: There is a need for a clear definition of exacerbations used in clinical trials in patients with bronchiectasis, and an expert conference was convened to develop a consensus definition for use in clinical research.
