Morphometric tools for landmark data: geometry and biology

This review provides a critical analysis of the biological effects of the most widely used plasticizers, including dibutyl phthalate, diethylhexyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate and bisphenol A (BPA), on wildlife, with a focus on annelids (both aquatic and terrestrial), molluscs, crustaceans, insects, fish and amphibians. Moreover, the paper provides novel data on the biological effects of some of these plasticizers in invertebrates, fish and amphibians. Phthalates and BPA have been shown to affect reproduction in all studied animal groups, to impair development in crustaceans and amphibians and to induce genetic aberrations. Molluscs, crustaceans and amphibians appear to be especially sensitive to these compounds, and biological effects are observed at environmentally relevant exposures in the low ng l−1 to µg l−1 range. In contrast, most effects in fish (except for disturbance in spermatogenesis) occur at higher concentrations. Most plasticizers appear to act by interfering with the functioning of various hormone systems, but some phthalates have wider pathways of disruption. Effect concentrations of plasticizers in laboratory experiments coincide with measured environmental concentrations, and thus there is a very real potential for effects of these chemicals on some wildlife populations. The most striking gaps in our current knowledge on the impacts of plasticizers on wildlife are the lack of data for long-term exposures to environmentally relevant concentrations and their ecotoxicity when part of complex mixtures. Furthermore, the hazard of plasticizers has been investigated in annelids, molluscs and arthropods only, and given the sensitivity of some invertebrates, effects assessments are warranted in other invertebrate phyla.

The copepod Tigriopus: a promising marine model organism for ecotoxicology and environmental genomics.

A new species of Normanellidae is described from Gwangyang Bay, Korea. This species is placed in the genus Normanella Brady, 1880 based on the following morphological characteristics: 1) 5-segmented female antennule, 2) antennary exopod with four setae, 3) mandible with discrete endopod and two setae on basis, 4) maxillule with two basal endites, 5) maxilla with allobasis accompanied by two setae and a spine, and 6) the sixth leg of the male with three setae. Normanella spinosa, new species, is closely related to Normanella bifida Lee & Huys, 1999. However, the new species is clearly distinguished by the characteristic processes on the dorsal surface, especially well-developed, large spiny-form processes on the urosome. In addition, N. spinosa has a sharply pointed rostrum, and the P1 enp-1 with a smaller inner seta than that of N. bifida. A new species of the genus Normanella (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from Gwangyang Bay, Korea

A survey on the harpacticoid copepods from an intertidal zone in Hyeopjae sandy beach, Jeju Island, Korea, resulted in the discovery of an unusual laophontid, Jejulaophonte hyeopjaeensis sp. n., which cannot be placed in any extant genus within the family. To accommodate the species, a new genus of the family Laophontidae T. Scott, 1905 is proposed and fully described here. The new species is closely related to the lineage of the five primitive genera, Carraroenia McCormack, 2006, Coullia Hamond, 1973, Hemilaophonte Jakubisiak 1933, Psammoplatypus Lee & Huys, 1999, and Robustunguis Fiers, 1992 (the CCHPR-lineage) by the reduced P2 endopod, ovate shape of the female P5 exopod and sexual dimorphism in the P3 endopod. However, it displays discrepancies from the species of the CCHPR-lineage in the presence of an inner seta on P3 and P4 exp-2, four setae on P4 enp-2, and an inner seta on P3 and P4 enp-2 in the female. Furthermore, no other species within the family Laophontidae has three setae on P2 exp-3 and a seta on P2 enp-2 at the same time. The new species has sexual dimorphism in the antennule, genital segmentation and the legs from P2 to P5. The terminal seta on the second endopodal segment of P2 in the male is longer than that in the female. The endopod of P3 is 3-segmented and displays a short inner apophysis on the second segment in the male. The outer setae on the exopod of P3 and P4 are distinctly thicker and stronger in the male than in the female. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) sequencing of the new species has been realized in order to be used in future phylogenetic analysis.

A new genus (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Laophontidae) from Jeju Island of Korea

A new aegisthid copepod, Cerviniopsis reducta sp. nov. is described from the deep sea in Sagami Bay, Japan. The new species has superficial resemblance to C. minutiseta Ito, 1983 in the armature formula of swimming legs. However they differ from each other in the shape of setae of the swimming legs, the distal margin of operculum, length of caudal rami, and the location of setae on P5 exopod. Also, the male of Neocervinia itoi Lee & Yoo, 1998 is described on the basis of samples collected from around the type locality in Sagami Bay, Japan. Sexual dimorphism of N. itoi male can be observed in the fused rostrum, atrophied mouthparts, P5, and P6. The sixth leg is symmetrical and both gonopores are presumably active, based on the presence of two spermatophores internally in the genital segment. This paper reports for the first time on the sexually dimorphic characters in the genus Neocervinia Huys, Mobjerg & Kristensen, 1997, reinstating its generic status with the newly revealed male characters.

A new species of the genus Cerviniopsis from Sagami Bay, Japan and reinstatement of the genus Neocervinia, with a report on the male of Neocervinia itoi Lee & Yoo, 1998 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Aegisthidae)

Male monstrilloid copepods, described herein as Monstrillopsis paradoxa sp. nov., were collected from the Chuja Islands, Jeju, Korea, using a light trap. They display many of the common features of Monstrillopsis, including large, prominent eyes, an anteriorly positioned oral papilla, and four setae on each caudal ramus. Type-2 modification of the antennules further supports the assignment of the new species to Monstrillopsis. However, the present specimens have an unusually low number of urosomal somites, just three in total, compared to five in males of all congeneric species, and from four (in Cymbasoma) to five in males of all other monstrilloid genera. Up until now, in the Monstrilloida only females of Cymbasoma have been known to have as few as three urosomal somites.
