Journal ArticleDOI

Enamel matrix-derived protein stimulates attachment of periodontal ligament fibroblasts and enhances alkaline phosphatase activity and transforming growth factor beta1 release of periodontal ligament and gingival fibroblasts.

TL;DR: The results indicate that HPLF and HGF respond differently to EMP, which might contribute, during the initial stages of periodontal healing, to selective outgrowth and colonization of exposed root surfaces in vivo.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fine structure of fibroblasts in the periodontal ligament of the rat incisor and their possible role in tooth eruption

TL;DR: Data are presented which support the view that fibroblasts in the periodontal ligament of the incisor, apart from synthesizing collagen, are also engaged in degrading collagen fibres, necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the ligament in a dynamic situation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cysteine proteinases and matrix metalloproteinases play distinct roles in the subosteoclastic resorption zone.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of low molecular weight inhibitors of cysteine proteinases (E-64, Z-Phe-Tyr(O-t-Bu)CHN2 or CA074[Me) on the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs).
Journal ArticleDOI

Phagocytosis of bone collagen by osteoclasts in two cases of pycnodysostosis

TL;DR: Electron microscopic examination of bone biopsies obtained from two patients suffering from pycnodysostosis revealed that osteoclasts contained (sometimes large) cytoplasmic vacuoles filled with bone collagen fibrils, suggesting that bone matrix had been phagocytosed and subsequently exposed to hydrolytic enzymes of the lysosomal apparatus.
