Introduction The most widely used instruments to assess food addiction – the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) and its modified version (mYFAS 2.0) – have not been validated in a Taiwanese population. The present study compared the psychometric properties between the Taiwan versions of YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 among university students. Methods An online survey comprising the YFAS 2.0, mYFAS 2.0, Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) were used to assess food addiction, self-stigma, and physical activity. Results All participants (n = 687; mean age = 24.00 years [SD ± 4.48 years]; 407 females [59.2%]) completed the entire survey at baseline and then completed the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 again three months later. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 both shared a similar single-factor solution. In addition, both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 reported good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.90 and 0.89), good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.71 and 0.69), and good concurrent validity with the total scores being strongly associated with the WSSQ (r = 0.54 and 0.57; p < 0.01), and less strongly associated with BMI (r = 0.17 and 0.13; p < 0.01) and IPAQ-SF (r = 0.23 and 0.25; p < 0.01). Discussion Based on the findings, the Taiwan versions of the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 appear to be valid and reliable instruments assessing food addiction.

The Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 and the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 in Taiwan: Factor structure and concurrent validity

Abstract Background Although the definition of food addiction is not agreed upon, it is characterized by eating more than expected without being hungry, not being able to visit certain places associated with overeating or unsuccessfully trying to cut down on the consumption of certain foods. The modified YFAS (mYFAS 2.0) version, instrument available to evaluate food addiction, was shown to have good psychometric properties. Our objective was to assess the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the mYFAS (mYFAS-Ar-Leb) in the Lebanese population. Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled 1268 persons residing in Lebanon (September–November 2020). The mean age of the participants was 26.18 years (SD = 11.17; min: 18; max: 85), with 65.1% females. The percentage of participants with food addiction was 226 (17.8%) in the total sample. A confirmatory factor analysis was run on the one-factor structure among the total sample. Results The fit indices of the confirmatory factor analysis of the scale were excellent. The Cronbach’s alpha value was good for the total scale. The mYFAS-Ar-Leb score was positively and strongly associated with stress, anxiety and depression. Conclusion Our study findings highlighted that the use of the mYFAS-Ar-Leb in Lebanese population might help estimate food addiction prevalence and stress on the need for effective treatment and preventive measures to craving for addictive foods.

Food addiction (FA) is a prevalent concern that may manifest as poorly controlled food consumption and promote overweight/obesity. Thus, having a well-established instrument for assessment may facilitate better prevention and treatment. The current study investigated the psychometric properties of two common measures of FA (i.e., the Yale Food Addiction Scale [YFAS] 2.0 and its modified version, mYFAS 2.0) using a robust statistical analysis (Rasch model).In this cross-sectional study, the scales were sent to 974 students studying in higher education (60% females) in Taiwan through online media including email and social networks. Rasch modeling was used to assess dimensionality, difficulty level, and item misfit and hierarchy. Differential item functioning (DIF) was performed to examine consistency of the items across gender and weight status.Rasch analysis indicated 3 items of the 35 items belonging to the YFAS 2.0 (8.6%) and none belonging to the mYFAS 2.0 were misfit. Unidimensionality and construct validity of both scales were supported by appropriate goodness-of-fit for diagnostic criteria. The person separation was 3.14 (reliability = 0.91) for the YFAS 2.0 and 2.17 (reliability = 0.82) for mYFAS 2.0, indicating the scales could distinguish participants into more than 3 strata. Only one substantial DIF was found for diagnostic criteria of "Failure to fulfill major role obligation" in the YFAS 2.0 across gender.According to Rasch modeling, both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 have acceptable construct validity in Chinese-speaking youth. Scoring methods using either diagnostic criteria or symptom counts for both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 are supported by the present Rasch findings.Food addiction is related to eating disorders and may overlap with a variety of disorders, including binge-eating disorder, night-eating syndrome, bulimia nervosa or other conditions. Therefore, it is important for healthcare providers to assess food addiction and one commonly used method is using the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) developed by Gearhardt and her colleagues. The YFAS has been updated and revised into two versions: the YFAS 2.0 and modified YFAS 2.0 (i.e., mYFAS 2.0). Psychometric testing studies have reported the feasibility and adequate properties for both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0. However, prior studies’ findings were based on classical test theory (CTT) findings. The present study thus used a modern test theory (i.e., Rasch models) to examine if both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 have similarly satisfactory psychometric properties shown in the CTT findings. The present findings using Rasch models support the use of both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 to assess food addiction among youth. Therefore, healthcare providers may use either the YFAS 2.0 or mYFAS 2.0 to assess levels of food addiction.

Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) and modified YFAS 2.0 (mYFAS 2.0): Rasch analysis and differential item functioning

Background Mental health problems has become a major public health issue among medical students. Self-esteem and psychological flexibility were important associated factors for mental health, but their relations have not been discussed in medical students. The present study aimed to assess the status of mental health problems among medical students and identified whether psychological flexibility had a mediating role in the effects of self-esteem on the top three most common psychological symptoms. Methods A total of 810 undergraduate students from 18 classes comprised in the sample. Nine dimensions of psychological symptoms was assessed by the Symptom Checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R). Self-esteem was measured by the Self-esteem Scale (SES) and psychological flexibility was evaluated by the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire 2nd Edition (AAQ-II) and Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ-F). Univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the relationship among the top three common psychological symptoms, self-esteem, psychological flexibility, and participants' characteristics. The mediating effect of psychological flexibility between self-esteem and psychological symptoms was detected by bootstrap method. Results 57.8% of the medical undergraduate students reported positive at least one of the nine psychological symptom dimensions assessed by the SCL-90-R and 13.8% of students had moderate or more severe symptoms. The symptoms of obsessive-compulsiveness, interpersonal sensitivity, and depression were the three most common psychological symptoms among the medical students. Meanwhile, self-esteem and psychological flexibility were negatively associated to the symptoms of obsessive-compulsiveness, interpersonal sensitivity, and depression. And, almost 50% effects of self-esteem on these three symptoms in medical students exert indirect effects through psychological flexibility. Conclusions Psychological distress was quite common in the Chinese medical students. The three most common psychological symptoms were successively obsessive-compulsiveness, interpersonal sensitivity, and depression. Low self-esteem and psychological inflexibility might be the risk factors for these top three symptoms, and psychological flexibility might play a mediating role in the effects of self-esteem on these psychological symptoms.

The Influence of Self-Esteem and Psychological Flexibility on Medical College Students' Mental Health: A Cross-Sectional Study

Obesity prevalence has substantially increased in China over the past decade. In China, over 1 in 7 individuals meet the criteria for overall obesity, and 1 in 3 meet the criteria for abdominal obesity, obesity has become a significant problem. Studies have shown that food addiction and obesity are inextricably linked. The modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (mYFAS 2.0) is a brief measurement for assessing food addiction. This study aimed to explore the structure of the Chinese version of the mYFAS 2.0 and assess the occurrence of food addiction in a sample of college students in Northeast China. A cross-sectional design was conducted in a sample of 1099 undergraduate students in Northeast China. Participants completed the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Chinese version of the mYFAS 2.0, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-8), and the Self-Esteem Scale (SES) to test the hypothesis. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed to examine the underlying factor structure of the mYFAS 2.0. Two weeks later, 62 students who participated in the first test were recruited to evaluate the test–retest reliability. The Chinese version of the mYFAS 2.0 demonstrated adequate internal consistency, good test–retest reliability and satisfactory construct validity. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis found that the Chinese version of the mYFAS 2.0 demonstrated a good fit to the two-factor solution identified by the exploratory factor analysis and showed superior fit indices compared to the one-factor model. The prevalence of food addiction in our sample was found to be in line with rates observed in other Asian and Western samples. The mYFAS 2.0 symptom count scores were correlated with BMI, the idea of dieting to lose weight, the desire to overeat, low self-esteem, and impulsivity. The results indicate that the Chinese version of the mYFAS 2.0 has good reliability and validity, and that it can be considered a tool to evaluate the addictive eating behaviours of undergraduate students. This study examines the construct validity of the Chinese version of the mYFAS 2.0 and explores the relationships between food addiction and self-esteem, impulsivity, and other clinical variables. The results show that the Chinese mYFAS 2.0 scale has a two-factor structural solution and has good psychometric characteristics. Of 1099 college students in Northeast China, the rate of food addiction was 6.7%. In addition, food addiction scores are associated with BMI, the idea of dieting to lose weight, the desire to overeat, self-esteem, and impulsivity.

Translation of the Chinese version of the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 and its validation among college students

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to global public health. Inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to an increase in antibiotic resistance. Individual self-efficacy in the appropriate use of antibiotics plays a key role, especially in China where the population has easy access to antibiotics. However, there are no tools available to assess the self-efficacy of appropriate antibiotic use for Chinese adults. We aimed to translate and develop a Chinese version of the Appropriate Antibiotic Use Self-Efficacy Scale (AAUSES), and validate its reliability and validity.A total of 659 adults were recruited to participate in the questionnaire. The original version scale was first translated into Chinese using the backward and forward translation procedures. The internal consistency reliability of the scale was measured by the Cronbach alpha coefficient, the test-retest reliability, and the corrected item-total correlation. The validity of the scale was assessed by the content validity index, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis.The content validity index of the scale was 0.96. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) supported a 4-factor structure of the translated questionnaire, and the discriminant validity of the scale was good. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed ﻿i﻿n the model fitness index, the chi-square degree of freedom was 2.940, the goodness-of-fit index(GFI) was 0.929, the incremental fit index (IFI) was 0.908, the comparative fit index(CFI) was 0.906, root mean square error of approximation(RMSEA) was 0.077, and standardized root mean residual (SRMR) was 0.0689, and the model fitting indexes were all in the acceptable range. Cronbach alpha coefficient for the scale was 0.910. The test-retest reliability was 0.947, and the corrected item-total correlations for the items ranged from 0.488 to 0.736. Self-efficacy for appropriate antibiotic use in adults varied by education, occupation, income, place of residence, and whether or not they had heard of antibiotic resistance.The results indicated that the Chinese version of the AAUSES had good reliability and validity. Therefore, it can be considered a tool to evaluate the appropriate antibiotic use self-efficacy of adults in China.

Reliability and validity evaluation of the appropriate antibiotic use self-efficacy scale for Chinese adults

Despite the high sensitivity of the STOP‐Bang questionnaire [snoring, tiredness, observed apneas, high blood pressure, body mass index, age, neck size, gender] questionnaire (SBQ), which is widely used to screen individuals at high risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), few studies have evaluated the discrimination related to sex in the SBQ. Therefore, our study aimed to assess whether SBQ performance is gender‐related and modified by changing body mass index (BMI) and neck circumference (NC) cut‐off values. A total of 470 patients attended the sleep centres. They were divided into moderate‐to‐severe OSA and non‐moderate‐to‐severe OSA groups based on the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) and the results of the SBQ screening. The predictive performance of the SBQ screening instrument was evaluated by 2 × 2 contingency tables and discriminatory ability, which was estimated from the area under the curve (AUC) obtained from receiver operating characteristic curve. Our results suggest that when screening for moderate‐to‐severe OSA, the original SBQ has higher sensitivity and lower specificity for men; however, women have higher specificity and lower sensitivity. The SBQ achieved the maximum AUC of 0.783 for men and 0.634 for women when the BMI cut‐off value was established at 30 kg/m2 and the NC cut‐off value was established at 38 cm in men, and the BMI cut‐off value was established at 25 kg/m2 and the NC cut‐off value at 36 cm in women. Balancing the optimal sensitivity and specificity, the cut‐off value of the optimal modified SBQ total scores for men was determined to be ≥4 and ≥3 for women.

Accuracy and modification of the STOP‐bang questionnaire for screening patients with obstructive sleep apnea in China

Background OSA is an independent risk factor for several systemic diseases. Compared with mild OSA, patients with moderate-to-severe OSA have more severe impairment in the function of all organs of the body. Due to the current limited medical condition, not every patient can be diagnosed and treated in time. To enable timely screening of patients with moderate-to-severe OSA, we selected easily accessible variables to establish a risk prediction model. Method We collected 492 patients who had polysomnography (PSG), and divided them into the disease-free mild OSA group (control group), and the moderate-to-severe OSA group according to the PSG results. Variables entering the model were identified by random forest plots, univariate analysis, multicollinearity test, and binary logistic regression method. Nomogram were created based on the binary logistic results, and the area under the ROC curve was used to evaluate the discriminative properties of the nomogram model. Bootstrap method was used to internally validate the nomogram model, and calibration curves were plotted after 1,000 replicate sampling of the original data, and the accuracy of the model was evaluated using the Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test. Finally, we performed decision curve analysis (DCA) of nomogram model, STOP-Bang questionnaire (SBQ), and NoSAS score to assess clinical utility. Results There are 6 variables entering the final prediction model, namely BMI, Hypertension, Morning dry mouth, Suffocating awake at night, Witnessed apnea, and ESS total score. The AUC of this prediction model was 0.976 (95% CI: 0.962–0.990). Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test χ2 = 3.3222 (P = 0.1899 > 0.05), and the calibration curve was in general agreement with the ideal curve. The model has good consistency in predicting the actual occurrence of moderate-to-severe risk, and has good prediction accuracy. The DCA shows that the net benefit of the nomogram model is higher than that of SBQ and NoSAS, with has good clinical utility. Conclusion The prediction model obtained in this study has good predictive power for moderate-to-severe OSA and is superior to other prediction models and questionnaires. It can be applied to the community population for screening and to the clinic for prioritization of treatment.
