A risk-averse marketing strategy and its effect on coordination activities in a remanufacturing supply chain under market fluctuation

This paper extends previous environmental management research by building and empirically testing a model of the contingency effects of green advertising on the relationships between environmental management practices in terms of environmentally conscious manufacturing and product stewardship, environmental reputation and financial performance. We examine the value of green advertising in sharing and publicizing information about organizational achievements in environmental preservation in a business-to business context with the Taiwanese electronics manufacturing industry. The theoretical propositions are largely confirmed by structural path analyses of survey responses collected from 122 Taiwanese electronics manufacturers. Green advertising delivers financial benefits only for those manufacturers that do not have an established environmental reputation. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment

Uncovering the Value of Green Advertising for Environmental Management Practices

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy introduced in Europe, back in the 1990s. Under EPR, a producer's responsibility for its products is extended beyond the consumption stage, and the producer has to meet the targets of collection and recycling rates imposed by the EPR legislation. Motivated by the importance of this topic, in this paper, we conduct a systematic review on EPR from an operations management perspective. To be specific, we categorize the EPR literature, for both e-wastes and non-e-wastes, by research methodologies (qualitative case studies, quantitative empirical research, and analytical modeling studies) and discuss the respective findings. In addition to systematically exploring the state-of-the-art research within the context of EPR, we investigate pertinent issues, such as the implementation of EPR, EPR management systems, supply chain management under EPR, and EPR-related operations (such as end-of-life product management and design for recyclability). We highlight some EPR-related innovative measures and proposals in five areas, namely policy, product, process, supply chain, and technology. Finally, we discuss future research and propose a concluding picture of how EPR can help establish innovative operational measures to improve sustainability

Coordinating and pricing decisions in two competitive reverse supply chains with different channel structures

We study the design of reverse channels in a supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and a retailer The manufacturer makes a new product and sells it through the retailer in a previous period Used products are collected for remanufacturing at the end of the previous period In the current period, remanufactured products are sold at a lower price, together with the new products The used products can be collected either by the manufacturer or by the retailer A minimum percentage for remanufactured products is enforced by a government extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy We use game theoretic models to explore how the optimal reverse channel choice is influenced by the pricing difference on new and remanufactured products, and by the government EPR policy We find that the most effective way to collect used products is through the manufacturer In addition, the government EPR policy can benefit remanufacturing activities, promote sales of the remanufactured products, and increase supply chain profit We also show that the manufacturer benefits more when consumers are more willing to pay for a remanufactured product

Reverse channel design: the impacts of differential pricing and extended producer responsibility

This research investigates the impacts of the manufacturer’s fairness concerns on the supply chain performance when the power retailer implements a price squeeze and market service investment together. Through game-theoretic modeling, we find that 1) in the absence of fairness, although the manufacturer may be worse off due to possessing imperfect information on the price squeeze rate, the channel may be coordinated through an ex-ante negotiation between the two parties. 2) When the manufacturer has fairness concerns for price squeeze, both channel performance and brand goodwill are made worse by disadvantageous inequality and improved by advantageous inequality versus the case of no fairness concerns. Furthermore, channel members’ ex-ante negotiations regarding a profit reallocation scheme under certain conditions may achieve the following three objectives: generating a channel profit of the coordination level, promoting brand goodwill to the level of the integrated channel, and creating an equitable channel relationship.
