TL;DR: In this article , electron detrapping through ion-electron coupling is proposed to be the fundamental cause for the superior optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites.
Abstract: Halide perovskites have emerged as revolutionary materials for high performance photovoltaics and optoelectronics. However, ionic beneficial role on the superior optoelectronic properties has been largely ignored and is least understood. Here electron detrapping through ion-electron coupling is proposed to be the fundamental cause for the superior optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites. We elucidate that electron detrapping directly results in significantly enhanced fluorescence efficiency, prolonged carrier lifetime and diffusion length, as well as the anomalous phenomena of defect healing and defect tolerance, which are responsible for the excellent device performance of halide perovskites. Using modified rate equations, we establish the correlation between ionic and electronic dynamics in the different timescales of nanoseconds and seconds. This finding provides deep physical understanding in halide perovskite with mixed ionic-electronic conduction and suggests the possibility to maximize the potential of halide perovskite devices through enhancing ion-electron coupling.
